WHO WE ARE:  A collaboration of tiny house advocates

We are the tiny house community. In Los Angeles, we are LATCH Collective , Sol Haus Design, members of the American Tiny House AssociationNomad and Makes a Village. We are committed to advocating for the right to design, build and live tiny. Using MeetUp groups, Facebook, workshops, and through membership to the American Tiny House Association, people from all over the Los Angeles area, Fresno and Ventura and Orange county have joined together to advocate for tiny houses on wheels as a legal housing option.

Dan Fitzpatrick: Former member of the Fresno City government and State Chapter Leader of the American Tiny House Association, Dan has years of experience in city renewal and development. Dan is our champion! With help from local tiny house builders and tiny house advocates, Dan successfully integrated tiny houses on wheels into Fresno’s accessory dwelling unit ordinance. He brings his experience to Los Angeles, where he presented with Tessa Baker and Amy Turnbull at the Mayor’s office. His presentation demonstrated how to include tiny houses on wheels as accessory dwelling units. Dan travels up and down the state presenting and advocating for our right to live tiny legally.

Tessa Baker: Tessa is a mover and a shaker. She owns and operates her workspace, LATCH Collective, here in Los Angeles. She is also the American Tiny House Association National Coordinator and State Chapter Leader. Tessa has organized the Los Angeles Tiny House Enthusiasts Group, created an extensive advocacy network, The Tiny Advocacy Network of LA (TAN), and holds regular workshops promoting tiny house builds and advocacy. She has been instrumental in reaching out to policymakers in Los Angeles to promote tiny houses on wheels as ADUs.

Vina Lustado: Vina lives in her tiny house full time and is a strong advocate in Ojai.  Along with Dan Fitzpatrick and local citizens, Vina has made great strides in getting tiny houses on wheels as accessory dwelling units (ADU's) in Ojai - but we're not there yet! This effort will help a great deal!

Kevin Polk: Kevin has been active in and around Los Angeles and in other regions of California on behalf of the work he does to help start a village for homeless veterans, Makes a Village .

Amy Turnbull: Amy is Vice President of the American Tiny House Association. She travels between Ojai and Los Angeles, lending her voice at public meetings. She created a demonstration program, ImagineOpolis.org, to help showcase tiny houses as ADUs.

Dominique Moody: Dominique is an assemblage artist and advocate. Dominique is a former resident of South Los Angeles but had to relocate since her home is not yet legal. If the ADU Ordinance is re-drafted to include tiny houses on wheels, Dominique can move back to the neighborhood she loves!

WHAT WE ARE DOING: Advocating for tiny houses on wheels as ADUs in residential communities in Los Angeles

Background:

California has recently reacted to the lack of affordable housing by asserting its control over city zoning practices that were largely exclusionary of affordable housing. One affordable housing option that was particularly affected by zoning was accessory dwelling units. Overly restrictive minimum lot size requirements, parking etc. presented barriers to this viable, low-cost housing option. On January 1, the State of California instituted more progressive policies for ADUs statewide. What is not included is tiny houses on wheels, or moveable tiny houses. These tiny houses are a perfect fit as affordable housing. Tessa Baker began the process of meeting with Los Angeles city planning officials and the Mayor’s office. Tessa and a team of advocates in the tiny house community crafted additions for moveable tiny houses to the Draft Accessory Dwelling Unit Ordinance for Los Angeles

TIME IS SHORT! WE NEED YOUR HELP TO LEGALIZE TINY HOUSES ON WHEELS AS ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS!

We need your donations to help bring in tiny houses to demonstrate to policymakers in Los Angeles how tiny houses will help fill the gap in affordable housing. Vina Lustado has donated her SOL POD Mobile Studio. We want to place tiny houses on wheels on properties and extend invitations to the Planning and Land Use committee members to demonstrate how this readily-available housing option will help provide additional affordable housing in Los Angeles.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Your donation of even $10 will go a long way in helping to pay for this event. Your donation will help pay for towing, drivers and gasoline.

Please post this link on social media and invite your friends to help in the effort to legalize tiny houses on wheels in Los Angeles! We want to start the momentum and you can be part of that effort! Time is running out!

The event is: Yes! Tiny House in My Backyard, March 5-6. Details here .
