Franklin Tenants Support Fund
The twelve tenants at Hollywood's Franklin & Western have been forced to suffer at the hands of vulture landlords for years. Their landlord operated an illegal boarding house, charging them $600 for a single bunk bed. He refused to address multiple code and health violations, including mold, bed bugs, rats, and faulty plumbing. Then he sold the building.
Instead of fixing these violations, the new owner, Dynamic Development Company, is pretending that these rent controlled tenants are squatters, and trying to kick them all out. Dynamic has plans to demolish the building to build an 86-unit mixed-use above-market development.
Dynamic Development Company wants to be seen as the good guys because their development will include eleven "Very Low Income" apartments, meaning the current tenants will have to compete with folks from all over the city for the fewer beds then the ones they'll lose!
The tenants have formed an association and gone on a rent strike to demand Dynamic meet with them and negotiate. This GoFundMe campaign will allow the tenants to take possession of the utilities, get the hot water turned on, and prevent the loss of electricity in their home.
Support the tenants in their fight for their dignity. Help them defend the Human Right to Housing!
