“And I dream of the vast deserts, the forests, and all of the wilderness of our continent; wild places that we should protect as a precious heritage for our children and for our children’s children. We must never forget it is our duty to protect this environment” (Nelson Mandela)

In an effort to rescue the Shongweni Dam & Resource Reserve, we challenged the paddling community to help us kickstart the project. We paddled 67 kilometers on the 18th July 2018, challenging paddlers to match our efforts a unit of their currency for every kilometer we paddled.

We ask for your support by donating a unit of your currency for every kilometer we paddled.

(Former President Mandela fought for justice for 67 years and on his Birthday, the 18th July, people are urged to dedicate only 67 minutes to making a difference.)

We completed the paddle successfully however our efforts to make a success of rescuing the reserve continues. We raised 10% of our target and we have expressed our gratitude to the paddling community for their generosity. We have a long way to go…

On the 1st July 2018, the responsibility of operating Shongweni Dam and Resource Reserve fell to the Zwelibonvu Community who were awarded the land in 2013 from a land claim they applied for. Sadly, they were only advised of the land being transferred to their community trust over a year later, in 2014, and they were only handed the land to operate on the 1st July 2018.

All this with zero mentoring or assistance other than a post settlement fund from the Land Claims Commission that has not come through to the project yet.

Our challenge is to raise operating capital to sustain operations on the reserve for 3 months, thereafter post settlement government funding will provide the basic investment we will need to establish income streams that will sustain the reserve.

The challenges we face includes poaching, vandalism, copper and brass theft from the dam wall. We need to function at a basic level and continue to work towards generating funding for the project from other government entities.

Conservation Guardians  has been awarded the massive challenge of working with the community towards rescuing the Shongweni Resource Reserve, 1700 hectares of pristine biodiversity, from the state of disrepair they received it in on the 1st July 2018.

The fences that keep these animals safe have never been maintained and today the beautiful herd of giraffes, and the other animals are at risk and are exposed to various threats.

Conservation Guardians is mandated with the task of restoring this reserve back to its original splendor together with the community awarded the land, and we will not be able to achieve this without the right attitude, the right people and the necessary resources.

Since the land claim in 2013 the reserve has not received the attention it requires and this lack of maintenance and repair has left us with a reserve that we cannot open to the public for liability reasons.

- there is no fencing to secure the wildlife,
- community engagement deteriorated due to the indecision and lack of communication leading to vandalism and other consequences.
- the lack of maintenance has left the reserve assets in such a state of disrepair, they are unfit for public use.

Since the 1st July 2018, we have engaged with the communities to the point where we have stabilised the situation and have everyone's support.

We have employed a team of 18 people from the local communities neighbouring the reserve and have the process of  training and empowering these local people on how to run a reserve and preserve it's natural beauty has begun. They are beautiful committed people currently working with ZERO resources, only their commitment.

We will not give up on this task and assure you that our commitment on the ground and your contribution will rescue this dire situation.

We ask for your support by donating a unit of your currency for every kilometer we paddled.
