Purpose:

As daughters of Salvadoran and Nicaraguan immigrants, Siomara Umaña and Perla Solis-Silva, have a personal connection to the migrant caravan that is currently facing human rights violations from the Trump Administration. Due to the atrocities that immigrants are facing we have decided to travel to the U.S. – Mexican border to help.

We are travelling to Tijuana, Mexico from January 14 through January 19. We have received support from Lawyers for Good Government who connected us to a generous donor from Lawyer Moms for America who provided us with SkyMiles, thereby ensuring our roundtrip airplane fare. However, since we will be in Tijuana for a week we are looking for support to raise funds for our lodging expenses, on the ground expenses and food.

A Little Bit About Us:

Siomara is an immigration attorney at CARECEN NY who provides immigration legal services that includes working with unaccompanied children, asylum seekers, and providing Know Your Rights presentations, screenings and clinics. As the daughter of Salvadoran immigrants, Siomara feels privileged to advocate on behalf of the immigrant community through her daily work.

Perla is an attorney at a non-profit organization who advocates on behalf of vulnerable New York families. She started her career as an immigration attorney working at CARECEN NY where she provided immigration legal services that included but were not limited to working with unaccompanied children and providing Know Your Rights presentations. Perla is proud to be a first- generation American, born to Nicaraguan parents, and is humbled to be helping the immigrant community.

Funding Goal:

While in Tijuana, we will be volunteering with Al Otro Lado, an organization that serves indigent deportees, migrants, and refugees in Tijuana, Mexico. We are ready and capable of working on what is needed whether it be legal advice, credible fear interview preparations, know your rights presentations, data entry, etc. We understand the need in Tijuana is dire and our immigration knowledge and Spanish fluency is certainly going to be of great help.

We estimate our lodging expenses and food costs to be approximately $1400.00. Also, as a THANK YOU for your donation, we will be providing updates on our work via Perla’s Facebook; so please feel free to follow us! If any of the donation exceeds the travel costs we incur for this trip, we pledge to use the remainder to donate to Al Otro Lado, or time permitting, we will directly buy any items members of the caravan may need.

Lastly:

As we get closer to our trip we are regularly reminded that our help is needed. In the past weeks we have heard of unaccompanied minors being killed, immigrants being attacked with tear-gas, asylum seekers being unlawfully turned away from port of entries, and the list goes on. Help us in this fight! We thank you for your support, positive thoughts and prayers are also greatly appreciated.
