On September 13th, 2018 I'll be landing in Kathmandu, Nepal to join Roshi Joan Halifax and the incredible Upaya Nomad Clinic team to support Western medical doctors, nurses and health specialists along with Tibetan doctors on our journey through underserved, remote regions of Nepal. Over the four week trek on foot through the mountains we will setup field clinics and serve people who get very little support otherwise.
Over the years the Nomad Clinic has provided everything from medical, dental and prenatal care to delivering feminine hygiene kits, Little Sun solar lights and much more to people who may otherwise never get an opportunity for good healthcare without a lot of hardship.
We'll also be setting up a clinic for Rohingya refugees currently living in the region after being systematically driven out of their homes in Myanmar.
Friends and family have encouraged me to setup GoFundMe to help cover some of my costs doing this work. This is a charitable mission so I pay my own way to fly to Nepal, cover costs of food, guides, personal equipment and insurance. The total amount listed here is my total cost for the whole trip. I'm not expecting to cover the whole thing, but thought it'd be easiest to be up front with our budget.
My supportive, wonderful wife Karla and I had long since resolved to sell our car for something cheaper (done), tighten our belts and make it work financially. Anything you decide to give here is doing more than just helping me do this work, it's easing some pressure at home so I can continue my work to help in small ways to alleviate suffering in the world.
If for some crazy reason we cover all the costs, any overage will be donated to the Nomad Clinic.
The highest point in our trek looks to be over 18,000 feet! I'm going to bring a list of names of all the people who donated and whisper them to the mountains in thanks. I'll also be writing about my experiences on the journey when I get back.
