Help rebuild Olsen Farm!

$44,400 of $130,000 goal

Raised by 202 people in 23 months
Olsen Farm has been in our family since the 1930's when our great grandparents immigrated from Norway and sought out the country life.  They raised chickens and cows, and survived by relying on the land. 80 years later, we need your help to save the family lands and to keep Olsen Farm in the family after an untimely death.

In the past years we have been working to bring the land back to it's original glory through forest management and sustainable gardening techniques. We raise chickens, guinea hens and turkeys, keep bees and grow fruit trees, herbs and vegetables without sprays or pesticides. Our mission is to become as self sufficient as possible in our farm practices, and in turn share our knowledge and bounty with our local community.

The recent unexpected death of our father has left us with large debts, and at risk of losing the family lands, our livelihood and our home. He grew up on this farm, creating bonds with the animals and landscape, and learning all he could about farm life from his grand father. It was his dream to see Olsen Farm brought back to the glory of his childhood.

Your donations would allow us to purchase the family lands and continue our mission of reclaiming old growth orchards and further re-building Olsen Farm. Without this money we will have no choice but to sell off the farm lands, which may then be developed and lost to the family forever.

The heartbreak of losing our father has been devestating, and we will carry the weight of his loss for years to come. Further heartbreak from losing the family lands, and not being able to realize both his and our own dreams, would be unbearable.

It is never easy to ask for money, and we understand the realities of finances. The amount of money we need to collect is entirely overwhelming, these are parts of life that can not be prepared for. Please know that every dollar will be a step closer to maintaining a small local farm, to honoring our father's memory and to keeping Olsen Farm alive. We will be forever grateful.

Please feel free to take a look at our new farm blog to learn more about our history, our mission, and with your help, insurance of our future at Olsen Farm

Thank you all for your support and generosity,

Chris and Kristen

We came home today to find a ‘For Sale’ sign posted in front of the old farm house.

The home we are living in, that Tommy built by hand, where Chris and his siblings grew up, will begin forclosure in November.

We have been trying to work with family to reslove these matters for months. We have offered plans to settle debts of the estate but no agreements have been made. We were not told the land was going to be put on the market, and finding out this way has been heartbreaking.

So many positives have come to us over the year and a half we have been working to save the farm. We are truly grateful to each and every person who has reached out, donated, offered services and support. We could not keep pushing forward without each and every one of you, thank you all.

It’s crunch time now. Please, please help us save Olsen Farm.

If every person we know donates just $10 we can keep this historic farm together. Please share our story and encourage your friends and family to share. The saying ‘it takes a village’ has never rung more true.

Yesterday while selling 50/50 raffle tickets at our local Farmer’s Market a gentleman bought one ticket. When he learned we were raising money to try and save our family farm he said he would not put his contact info on his ticket- only his name- and if his ticket was drawn he wanted his share to go toward the farm.

He then returned 20 minutes later and dropped off this bucket of change- he must have run home, grabbed his saved-up coins and returned to donate to us for the farm.

Two incredible acts of kindness and generosity- from someone we had not met before. Thank you to this big hearted stranger, to us you are a hero. Olsen Farm survives because of you, and you are part of our farm family now. Your kindness keeps us moving forward.

We know our goal seems unreachable, but we also know the power of a community that supports its causes with every penny, combined with our love of this land and determination to do everything we can to protect it.

One small piece at a time- we will succeed. Please continue to donate and share our story- the more people reached the larger our farm family becomes. We are so honored to be part of this community and to be meeting so many amazing humans who live here.

Yesterday was the last day of our on-line auction fundraiser- we are overwhelmed with how successful the auction was as we were able to raise well over our goal of $2,000. THANK YOU to everyone who donated time, artwork and services to make this auction possible- and to everyone who bid on these awesome items. You are all part of our Olsen Farm family <3

We were also pre-approved for a small mortgage- which is amazing news!, and will allow us to pay off debts and move forward.

But- in order to get the mortgage the house needs costly repairs, including a new roof, replacement of all windows and sills, front door replacement, building of front step with railing, repair of foundation crack, bathroom replacement, septic assessment, minor electrical work, and siding repair. These required repairs are estimated to cost 70,000.00- 100,000.00, depending on the state of the septic system. Two steps forward- and one step back.

All we can do is continue to gather funds in every way we know how. Please share our story, share it with every human you know- the more the merrier and the closer we will be to reaching our goal.

Thanks Everyone, Please keep sending your good vibes our way. We need your support more than ever to keep moving forward.

The Holidays are an especially difficult time of year after losing a loved one.

It is easy to focus on our saddness and how hard this year has been. It is easy to focus on how much work there still is to be done to save Olsen Farm. The stress can be crippling. One small way we combat this stress is by keeping a list of all the good things that have come into our lives this year.

Our list includes: joining the local beekeeping club, being interviewed by local newspapers and radio shows, visits from our siblings, seeing monarch caterpillars and butterflies on the farm, going to the Wheeler family reunion, starting a bartering community, helping to save an injured barred owl and becoming an LLC.

Many of these connections and experiences came to us because of our tragedy, and each has changed us. Like a seed sprouting from the ashes, we continue to grow with each ray of sunshine and each drop of water.

The more money we can gather, the more land we can purchase and the more of our family's history can be preserved.

In this season of giving, please consider donating to our campaign. Every piece makes a difference.

Local farms are essential. Your donations make you not only a vital part of our present, but of our future as well. Start your own list of good things that have come this year, and add being part of saving Olsen Farm to it.

With love,

Kristen and Chris
