Help needed for family of 8

After two years of searching for a home, my son Marcus and future daughter in law Miranda finally decided on a 4 bedroom 2 bath home for their blended family of 5 kids (ages 1-10)plus one on the way. They closed on the house on June 14th after a private inspector gave the approval with minor electrical updates recommended prior to moving in. He also noted there was vermiculite insulation in the attic but as long as it wasn’t disturbed it would be fine. The electrical items were fixed and they moved in on the weekend of June 29th, 2019.

Approximately two weeks after moving in they noticed a crack starting to form around the ceiling fan in the toddlers bedroom. On July 17th approximately two minutes after Miranda and her parents exited the room, where they were assembling the kids bunk beds, half of the ceiling came crashing down onto the floor.

With the concern of what the inspector said about the insulation, they called an asbestos contracting company to have the insulation tested as well as their insurance company to alert them of what happened. The insulation was collected, tested, and the results came back positive for containing asbestos. They were told it could have possibly moved throughout the entirety of the house, considering asbestos is practically as microscopic as dust, filling the air and blanketing all surfaces and fabrics.

After two weeks of calling the insurance company looking for an answer, staying in hotels, staying with other family, they had no updates or assurance they would be covered. On August 7th Miranda filed a complaint on the insurance company for their lackadaisical efforts. They finally called back one day later only to tell them they would not be covered due to faulty installation of the ceiling. Stating the nails didn’t meet the current standard and were installed too far apart. Claiming swelling from moisture caused the nails to push out causing the ceiling to collapse. Note the house was built in 1951, who says that wasn’t the standard then?  The insurance company told them they would not cover hotel stay nor personal property damaged from the ceiling and asbestos.

It has been difficult for them to get all of the kids together under one roof. They hadn’t even had the chance to get all of the kids to spend one night in the new house together. The invoice for the clean up, removal, and repair of the ceiling? $15,244... Unable to secure another loan for the removal we are looking to anyone that can help them in any way. They were barely in the house for two weeks. Only a few boxes unpacked and now have not lived in their new home for over a month. They also tried reaching out to an attorney but was told that since this would not be a significant payout, no attorney would take the case. So any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you
