UPDATE!!!

Wow, our community ROCKS!!! We are well and truly blown away - never in our wildest dreams did we think that we would hit our £2500 target within just 15 hours of the campaign going live?! We really are bowled over, delighted, humbled and just so so grateful to every single person who's donated.

We mentioned in the original blurb (below) that if we exceeded the original target, then we would use any additional money raised to apply towards some artwork for the shutters. Our priority was to get the restaurant secured, but now we are in a position where we can also provide Masala Wala with a budget to make the shutters pretty! The more money we can raise for this, the bigger the budget Masala Wala will have to to get their shutters painted in a style that is fitting to both Masala Wala and the wider Brockley street art scene. In addition, there's a planning permission cost of £206, as the restaurant is in the Brockley Conservation Area. So we propose keeping the GoFundMe open for the time being so that anyone who would like to contribute to a budget for the artwork and the planning costs is able to do so.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone! Jane & Nicola xxx

Background

Many of us in the South East London community will know of the much-loved family run restaurant in Brockley Cross, Masala Wala, which was set up by mother and daughter team Nabeela and Saima in 2014. As you may have read in the News Shopper recently (read here), the Masala Wala ladies haven’t had the best of years. In January, the restaurant had its window smashed in with a bin, then in April they were rocked by the devastating news that 29 year old founder Saima had stage 4 incurable cancer. Then last month their window was smashed in again in another attempted break-in.

As well as being physically very unwell due to the cancer and the treatment she was receiving, Saima also suffered from PTSD and panic disorder after her devastating diagnosis. Saima is now slowly coming to terms with her illness and is dealing with it very publicly by writing a blog about her experiences, "Curry and Cancer", which you can read at curryandcancer.com. At times during the year, Saima has been unable to work at the restaurant due to the physical and mental effects of the cancer which has obviously impacted the business and led to additional unexpected staffing costs, and on top of that they were also left out of pocket by the break-ins.

GoFundMe Campaign

Saima is extremely proud of the stunning frontage she has created for Masala Wala and has to date been reluctant to buy shutters for the restaurant, as she wanted the frontage to be appreciated by everyone in its full splendour 24/7. However, after this year’s break-ins she has admitted that it’s probably time for a rethink as the risk of further break-ins, and the cost to the business that such break-ins entail, is too great.

The News Shopper article gave local resident Jane Martin, a loyal customer of Masala Wala, the idea of starting a fundraiser as a show of support for the restaurant. Jane teamed up with another local resident, Nicola Johnson, to launch this GoFundMe campaign - the aspiration behind the campaign is to see if we can show Masala Wala some big community love by giving them a special Christmas present from the community to round off their awful year on a more positive note. We are aiming to raise £2500 to buy and fit some shutters to provide the Masala Wala ladies with peace of mind and to secure the restaurant against future break-ins. If, by any chance, people's generous donations exceed the target, then we think it would be nice to apply any additional money towards some fitting artwork for the shutters (to soften the blow of having to cover up the beautiful Masala Wala frontage!)

We appreciate that the festive season is almost upon us, so not everyone will be in a position to contribute to this campaign. But if you are able to donate just a few pounds, and we manage to reach or even exceed our target, then we believe that this will be a fantastic display of community support for a much-loved independent local business.

Thank you to everyone in advance
Jane & Nicola xxx

So that’s a wrap - a HUGE lamb kofta wrap!! Brockley, SE London and Masala Wala friends & fans further afield - you have been AMAAAZING! Together we raised £3530 for the lovely Masala Wala ladies. In Just Three Days.

Together we have given these lovely ladies a superb early Christmas present - some shutters that will protect them against future mindless break-ins & provide them with peace of mind. And, as we smashed the target big-stylee, they now have some extra ££ to make their shutters pretty!! We can’t wait to see what they come up with!

As well as all the generous donations, some lovely comments were posted on the GoFundMe page - if you haven’t done so already, please take the time to read these, they express beautifully the depth of feeling for the restaurant and the Masala Wala team.

If only we could do a quick fundraiser to free Saima of the Big C. If Only It Was That Easy. Having seen Saima last week, we’re pleased to say that she’s looking well and doing her utmost to give this bastard disease the two fingers. She spoke enthusiastically of the writing and public speaking she’s been doing and she has lots more of this in the pipeline. Please do follow her blog curryandcancer.com and also follow her on Instagram (curryandcancer) where you can see for yourself the work she’s been doing and the courageous way in which she is dealing with her diagnosis. Saima has her 3 month CT scan today and I’m sure you’ll all join us in hoping that positive news will come from that.

Big Love and THANK YOU ❤️❤️❤️

Saima and the Masala Wala ladies have been following the campaign since we launched it and they've obviously been completely overwhelmed by your support. Here are a few words from Saima:

"We are totally shocked by the quick turnaround of this campaign by Jane & Nicola. Thank you to everyone who has donated! We are overwhelmed by the support of the community which we have been serving for nearly 4 years and we feel the love and energy around. ❤️ We feel absolutely honoured to have the support of Brockley and beyond.

We were amazed that the target was met within 15 hours of the campaign being published. It’s wonderful that our supporters are continuing to donate so that we can decorate the shutters and pay Lewisham Council planning fees to submit the applications due to our restaurant being In the conservation area. This will all help take the pressure off after the costs of the recent break in, we even had to pay the police for boarding the door up!

This campaign really restores our faith in how fabulous this community is, we love you all so much and believe in People Power!"

Good morning everyone! And thank you to all the new donors we've had since our last update! We weren't sure whether people would continue to donate their hard earned ££ after the original target was spectacularly smashed in record time yesterday!! But we're absolutely delighted to see that people are continuing to be incredibly generous and donate, so that we can give Masala Wala's new shutters a stunning makeover (and also cover the planning costs, but that bit's boring in comparison to a cool bit of street art)!!

Also, thank you to those of you who have given us names of some fab local artists as prospective candidates for the Shutter Makeover role - it's so thoughtful of you to do this and it's just really lovely to see people taking the time to invest their thoughts and ideas into this project, as well as their hard earned pounds!

We're going to keep the campaign live until probably midnight Sunday so that others who may wish to contribute to the artwork pot can do so - the more money we can collect for the artwork, the more opportunity this will provide for Masala Wala to create something really special for the shutters. As we all know, Brockley has incredibly high standards and fierce competition on the Street Art scene and I'm sure that Saima, given her own impeccably high standards, will be wanting to put Masala Wala firmly up there with the best! So please, if you can, continue to share the GoFundMe link with anyone you know who hasn't yet donated but may wish to do so.

Thank you to every single one of you once again - you've all been AMAZING! As mentioned in the first update, we were really quite nervous when we started, but you've all made this a really exciting and rewarding thing to do - so thanks from us on a personal level too!

Jane & Nicola xxx
