Help Lily and her family. Her Husband was Deported

Lily's husband, Walter, was deported on Thursday, March 21, 2019. He was a good father, a hard-working man, and had been living in the United States for 30 years.

Lily herself is a mother with 2 U.S. Citizen children who has called Florida home for over 20 years. Her family is a target of Trump’s deportation force and she desperately needs financial support to sustain her family while she fights to bring Walter back.

What happened to Walter?

Walter was in the process of applying for an employer-sponsored visa because his employer highly valued his work. In order to get his visa, he was required to attend routine check-ins at the ICE Processing Center in Miramar, Florida.

Upon arrival, ICE decided to detain Walter without justification and transfer him to the corporate-owned, for-profit Krome Concentration Camp. He was behind bars for a month racking up money for the corporation before they decided to deport him on March 21. [You can read more about the abusive conditions at Miramar and Krome here.]

Lily and her daughter were not notified in advance. They received the call the day-of stating that he was on a plane. Lily remained strong for him on the phone but immediately broke down after saying goodbye.

What’s check-in and why did ICE decide to deport him?

Think of it as being on parole (with or without an ankle bracelet). Some people adjusting their immigration status are required to meet face-to-face with an ICE agent every 3 months. In south Florida, ICE requires some people to attend with even greater frequency.

People report on their living situation and answer any questions that the ICE agent has about their lives. ICE can choose at any time, for any reason or no reason, to detain the person and deport them. As a federal agency, this is the power that ICE has and how they control the lives of immigrants with limited accountability.

What has Lily done since her husband was deported?

Lily has been a fighter. She has the support of United We Dream, the largest immigrant youth-led network, and a lawyer, to advocate to the federal government that they allow Walter to return home.

Lily has shared her story in the news . She has met with several state legislators and her Member of Congress to receive letters of support, both in Florida and in Washington, D.C. She has also hand-delivered a petition with 5,000 signatures from people like you to the Board of Immigration Appeals, which is based in Virginia.

And she’s not just fighting for herself. In meetings with her Member of Congress and other Congressional staffers, she has asked for Congress to stop giving more cash to ICE and Border Patrol in their annual budget, and instead, to back the Dream and Promise Act, which would provide 3 million youth, parents and adults a pathway to citizenship. In Tallahassee, Lily joined up with other Floridians for a day of action at the Capitol where she visited state legislators and urged them to not pass SB 168  the law that prevents cities and counties from saying NO to working with ICE. And more recently, she met with staff of Presidential candidates in Homestead, Florida to advocate for an end to family separations and kids in cages.
