Representation matters.

Growing up as a child of color that idolized characters imagined by the great Stan Lee, I understand the importance of having role models and heros that look like me and are celebrated by society. Especially in the current political atmosphere, where people of color are demonized and made to feel like they are less than, it is important to advocate for their success through narratives of heroism and courage. I am calling on you to join me in my mission to deliver this once-in-a-lifetime experience for Bronx children.

The mission of this campaign is to uplift black and brown children to be heroes in their communities. The children of the Bronx, my home city, will be the direct beneficiaries of our efforts.

This week, Frederick Joseph, a long-time friend of mine, launched a very successful campaign that will allow underprivileged children of Harlem to see the Black Panther this coming February. Following his unprecedented success, which saw an excess of $30,000 being raised in only four days (and counting!), Frederick challenged those in his immediate circle to launch campaigns for underprivileged children in their community.

As a resident of the Bronx, I humbly accept Frederick's challenge, and I am calling on you to join me in helping underprivileged children in the Bronx see themselves on the big screen.

Marvel's "Black Panther", starring Chadwick Boseman, features a hero of color than assumes the role of the protector King of Wakanda, following the passing of his father. This film provides children of color with the rare opportunity to see themselves on the big screen, presented to a global audience.

Clarkisha Kent of TheRoot.com writes about the importance of the Black Panther film: "Black Panther remains socially and culturally relevant because it imagines a world where black people continually triumph over the influences of capitalism, Western imperialism and white supremacy".

It is critical that children, particularly those color, see themselves as kings and queens and, above all, paragons of heroism.
