Early in the morning on Sunday September 23, 2018, the Ziemba family dairy farm in Adams, MA suffered a devastating loss of two of their major barns to a fire.  Loss of the barns included 800 round bales of hay used for winter feed, loss of a barn tractor, along with their primary shelter for their 250 head of cattle.  This farm has been in the Ziemba family since 1935 and is one of the few dairy farms still operating in Berkshire County.   Any contributions would be greatly appreciated to aid in the recovery process.

Gifts from the heart

Our world changed forever 5 weeks ago. The flames took our shelter and hay barn, our bull, our barn tractor and our winter hay. It tried to take our spirit too. In the first few hours after the fire, we felt the hope drain out of us as we surveyed the destruction. But as the hours passed and the firemen and EMTs stood by our sides, people showed up. Then, more people showed up. Some brought food to nourish our bodies. Others brought words to nourish our souls. Day after day, people have given their time, their resources, their finances, and their encouragement. All gifts from the heart. The fire tried to take our spirit, but the community has brought hope back to us and continues to give us the strength we need to push forward day after day, to get back to the fully working dairy farm we were 2 months ago. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your support of our family and farm. We will always be grateful.

"The farmer has to be an optimist or he wouldn't still be a farmer."
-Will Rodgers

A little over a week and a half has passed since the fire consumed our hay and shelter barns. If you drive by on Walling Road, the farm looks like it always has. But behind what you can see from the road, is now the void where the big barns once stood. Below is an aerial view of the farm...the red outlines show the structures that were destroyed in the fire. The arrow on the bottom right of the picture is the calf barn that you see from the road. No doubt, we have some extra work to do these days on the farm. This week, we have had amazing volunteers helping us get the corn chopped and covered, in the silo. Others, bringing food. Others giving donations. Your kind words and support keep us going and keep us optimistic that the view from above will look like this again! Thanks to each of you! -the Ziemba crew

It has been 4 days since the fire. With no winter feed or shelter, it appeared to be an impossible loss to recover from. But, friends and neighbors showed up. They hugged and cried with us. They brought food and water. They donated their time and money. Farmers donated hay and use of their manned equipment. This overwhelming support and kindness is giving us the drive and determination we need to keep pushing forward each day. These pictures reflect progress made today through the efforts of 30-40 volunteers... A very heartfelt thank you from each member of the Ziemba family, including our moo-cow girls.
