Harvey HELP

The Texas higher education community has watched with great sadness as Hurricane Harvey has spread destruction across our state and the communities we call home. College students across central and South Texas, who were just beginning the challenges of a new school year, are now facing a much different kind of challenge. Many will have their studies interrupted by the loss of income, property, transportation and school materials caused by Harvey—making it difficult or even impossible for them to continue their education.

As leaders in higher education, philanthropy, business and government, we are committed to helping all students succeed—and up to 500,000 students in the region affected by Hurricane Harvey need us now more than ever. Like many of you, we quickly began discussing how we, as a community, could be part of the recovery process in the coming days, weeks, months, and years and continue our mission of educating and supporting students—even in the face of this tragic natural disaster. To create an organized response to channel our eagerness to help, we are proud to announce Harvey HELP, a relief fund dedicated to helping college students affected by Hurricane Harvey.

HELP stands for Higher Education Learning Pathways, and reflects our goal to bring the Texas higher education community together to help students successfully recover from Hurricane Harvey, return to their classes, and persist on their higher education learning pathway.

Research shows that the majority of students actually leave school because of non-academic challenges, which is why we have chosen to focus on emergency aid to help students navigate financial and logistical challenges outside of the classroom and remain in school.

To maximize the fund’s impact with students and community, Harvey HELP’s Steering Committee, see below, will invite the president of each Texas college and university to forward contact information for the administrator of their respective emergency-aid program. Funds will then be distributed by each campus, according to established policy intended to help students stay on or return to their higher education pathways.

Please help us help these striving students as they overcome this challenge and continue on to success on the pathway to possibility that is education!

The relief efforts are being led by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), Austin Community College (ACC), Texas Association of Community Colleges (TACC), Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT), Council of Public Universities Presidents and Chancellors (CPUPC), Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD), Civitas Learning, and Communities Foundations of Texas (CFT), the parent of Educate Texas.
