Griswold Enrichment 911 Memorial

There are over 1,000 September 11 memorials throughout the world. Those created by children are few and far between, and seem to be only gardens and murals. UNTIL NOW. Children in Griswold, Connecticut ages 7-12 decided to create a permanent monument to honor the 9-11 heroes and remember the victims.
The Griswold Enrichment Program consisting of 16 children designed a monument. The students researched construction costs, and found a builder. These youths proposed their project to the Board of Education, the First Selectman, and the Griswold Fire Chiefs. Their proposal was well received, and approved.
This memorial will include two black granite rectangular pillars representing the World Trade Center. Standing between them will be a black granite Pentagon. There will be four light grey granite benches surrounding the monument. Behind the Pentagon will be a flagpole, proudly displaying the Stars and Stripes. It will be a place of reflection and remembrance for our community.
This ambitious project comes at a cost of approximately $15,000. This enrichment group is determined to see their vision come to life and have a positive effect on their community for many years to come. The challenge now is to raise the money.
