Global service-learning provides students with an opportunity to learn while working on a meaningful volunteer project that addresses an authentic community need in a foreign country.  As we immerse ourselves in another culture to volunteer for positive social change, we become better prepared to work within our city of Newburgh to make it a better place.

After visiting Ecuador in 2017 and Cambodia in 2018, our 2019 project involves working with victims of the crisis in Burma. In the summer of 2019, through a partnership with Into the Wild, twelve Newburgh students will travel to northern Thailand, where they will work to support Burmese refugees who have fled their homes. We will partner with an NGO that is working to support the refugees, as many of them will be unable to return to their home villages for the foreseeable future.  Because our program also focuses on spending time with grassroots change-makers who have identified a need in their own communities and worked towards solutions to address those needs, we will learn from the organizers who run that organization about community problem solving.

Because we believe that service-learning should be accessible to young people regardless of economic status, our program is exclusively funded through donations like yours, so every dollar counts!

$25 will purchase construction tools

$50 will pay for the group’s transport to the rural northern region of Thailand

$100 will purchase building materials for wheelchairs for refugees in need of mobility

$500 will pay for one student’s food and lodging for two weeks in Thailand

$1000 will pay for one student’s plane ticket to Thailand

Upon our return to Newburgh, New York, these same students will work as project managers for local Community Impact Projects.  Past cohorts of Global to Local have participated in service-learning projects in Quito, Ecuador , and Siem Reap, Cambodia ; click on the links to see reflections on those experiences.  Follow us on Twitter  for updates on our work and thank you for your support!
