Our own Gemini Elementary needs help retaining our School Resource Officer, Officer Alex Vila, for another year. In the past school year, Officer Vila brought a peaceful, safe and supportive role to the Gemini family. Already, Officer Vila has proven to be a priceless asset after his rapid response and lifesaving use of the Heimlich maneuver on a student choking in the cafeteria. An SRO preserves the highest level of safety for our students. If we do not retain an SRO, then a “school security specialist” with far less qualifications and training would be assigned to our school per the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Act and the Brevard County School Board.
The state will only allocate $52,000 for the SRO, which leaves the Town of Melbourne Beach/Melbourne Beach Police Department to cover the remaining cost of approximately $24,000. While the town continues with their summer budget workshops, and will look into possible grants for the following years, the Commission has challenged some Gemini parents to help contribute half of the shortfall, approximately $12,000. The funds raised will go directly to the Town of Melbourne Beach for the sole purpose of funding our SRO.
Through positive relationships with students and collaboration with educators and mental health professionals, SRO’s can proactively address school safety issues and divert at-risk students from the juvenile justice system. Properly selected, trained, and governed SRO’s can achieve positive outcomes for students and the community by providing youth with the supports they need to succeed in school and in life.
