Geeks for Kids

Tax deductible
We are designing and building hot rods for kids with movement limitations - kids like Jerry, shown above.  Our high school robotics team - The Red Hot Techie Peppers - our mentors and members of the tech community came together to build Jerry's car for last spring.   Jerry was four years old when we met him; he is a charming, sunny little boy who wanted desperately to play outside with his brothers, sisters and neighborhood friends.  Because a car drove over him when he was two and broke his spine, he cannot walk; and, because of his age, his insurance would not provide him with a motorized wheelchair.  So, he could only sit and watch the other kids play.   Now, Jerry is zooming around his yard and neighborhood in the car we built, and his friends compete to ride with him.

Last spring, we built a dozen cars for kids with movement limitations.  The kids who received these cars have varied challenges.  Some cannot walk.  Others can walk with crutches or other aids, but still have trouble keeping up with their typically-developing peers.  Some cannot use their hands effectively or at all.  Some can only move their heads and necks.  We customized a car for each child’s specific needs.

This spring, our team is banding together with other local engineers, programmers and roboticists to build 10 to 20 new cars  at Geeks for Kids.   The customized,  electric cars we design and build make a HUGE difference in kids' lives.   These cars help kids to grow in ways that just aren't possible when they are stuck in strollers or wheelchairs.   The cars help the kids develop "mental maps" of their world, give them the power to search out things that interest them, and help them engage with other kids.

These cars cost $750 and a $1,500 each.  And, we need your help!  The more money we raise, the more cars we can build.   Together, we can get more Kansas City kids with movement limitations racing!  Join the campaign today.  There are lots of ways to get involved.  You can:
