Begins at the Chakchiuma Swamp Natural Area (CSNA), a 300 acre property belonging to the City of Grenada , Mississippi that can be found just north of the historic downtown. The CSNA is part of a continuous green corridor featuring the Yalobusha River, Bogue Creek and a large tract of the US Army Corps bottomland forest connecting to Grenada Lake. In 2009, it was identified as a Natural Heritage Area by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks for its outstanding native habitat and biodiversity.
As of recent, the City of Grenada is in the process of accepting bids for a timber cut in the CSNA as an effort to secure funds. Our city is struggling to get out of a financial crisis and the city council is reviewing all their assets, potentially putting the CSNA in jeopardy.
The Friends of CSNA is a grassroots organization functioning under the 501(3)c of the Grenada Community Foundation .
Our mission is to assist the City of Grenada in the conservation and management of biodiversity with the vision of a nature park destination for our community to enjoy!
The Friends of CSNA have proposed an alternative plan to the Grenada City Council, who at this time are considering the request instead of permitting an select timber harvest.
If the city will accept our proposal, it would allow our community to keep our forested swamp and gain lots of new "Forest Friends".
HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP!
Our group, The Friends of CSNA are looking for "Forest Friends" to help us secure the bottomland forest surrounding the old Yalobusha River channel.
1. Make a contribution.
Your donation corresponds to one of our selected trees, based on it’s approximate timber value.
2. In return, our Forest Friend, you will receive: A detail of your symbolic adoption:
Each tree will be tagged with a number and have it's location recorded on a map. Your tree "friend" will share your name or the name of your choosing. Each "Forest Friend" will receive a bio about your tree and a watercolor print by Robin Whitfield which will include the name and number and location of your tree at CSNA on the back.
At this time, we have 1,500 trees in the process of being measured, tagged and numbered. Donations in the value of the approximate timber value will be offered to the City to permanently protect the trees.
Species that will be included in our include bald cypress, yellow poplar, cherry bark oak, over cup oak, water oak, sweet gum, red maple, hickory and other mixed hardwoods.

We are so excited to have Wildlife Mississippi, a well known conservation organization, ready to build a low maintenance 4 mile trail system with benches, boardwalks and signs filled with ecological information at CSNA.
THIS CAN ONLY HAPPEN with a combination of your help, and an agreement by the City of Grenada to provide a conservation contract to protect the area on both sides of North Main St.
In return The Friends of CSNA will sign a contract to raise at total of $200,000 by mid March 2017 to replace the money expected from a timber harvest. We are proud to be a part helping our city become all it can be!
This is a community project that is about all of us working together!
Our vision is to provide opportunities for all people to experience first hand the beauty of biodiversity in a healthy wetland habitat conveniently located 1/4 mile from town square.
Please help us show our city that this plan can work!
Fine Print: Your donation and tree selection will be official if/when the City Council accepts the money raised and agrees to protect the forest. If our plan is rejected or we can not raise the required amount, your donation will be returned to you in full.

The Friends of Chakchiuma Swamp Natural Area want to thank everyone for your prayers, support and contributions that have helped us get this far! We would not be here with out all of you!
This is a huge step in securing the forest and creates an extension for the Forest Friends campaign. We still need to raise the money equal to the value of the timber. We have already received more than $30,000 towards our $270,000 goal!
I am so thankful to our matching donor whose generosity of assets and spirit have bolstered our dreams into reality.
More about the campaign later. Right now...let's celebrate and enjoy watching the birds arrive to the canopy during migration!!
