About Friends on Newtonville Avenue Neighborhood
This neighborhood group came together as a grassroots community effort to stop the proposed self-storage facility at 255-257 Newtonville Avenue. The members are all residents of the Newtonville Avenue and Cabot Park neighborhood that would be directly impacted by the proposed facility. The group united to inform and organize neighbors, the majority of whom had not been previously notified by the City or the developer of the proposed project. We are dedicated to maintaining safety in our neighborhood, and ensuring that all neighborhood and impacted area residents become aware of this proposal and its negative consequences.
On August 2, 2016, Members of the neighborhood alliance The Friends of the Newtonville Avenue Neighborhood have filed a complaint in Massachusetts Superior Court to challenge the issuance of a Special Permit to allow construction of a massive self-storage facility in a densely populated residential neighborhood. The proposed facility would be 112,201 [A1] square feet and three stories (up to 36 feet high[A2] ) with a total of 1025 units, and would only have 16 parking spaces. The Special Permit grants exceptions from the requirements of the Newton’s zoning ordinance: it would allow an additional floor to be added, and increase of the floor area ratio (FAR) from 1.0 to 1.5% (a 33% bigger building) and a reduction in the required number of parking spaces from 46 to 16.
The legal battle is about to start and we are looking for funds to cover legal fees related to this action.
