Key Issue

Menstruation is one of the most natural and uniquely female experience. Regrettably, the reality is that a significant number of girls and women in South Sudan struggle to cope with their monthly periods due to lack of Sanitary Pads.

Our Goal

Our goal for this project is to provide hygienic sanitary pads to at least 12,800 school girls in South Sudan, over 32 States for our first distribution. We are aware that the number of school girls may be higher than the above-mentioned number but we will first aim to target the girls in rural areas.

We are planning to send down our first team to the field in March 2018 for our first distribution, therefore, we are requesting your kind support as soon as you can because the ordering of sanitary pads from Uganda and transporting them to South Sudan will take 4 -6 weeks.

The Negative Effect

Menstruation has had a negative effect on the education of girls from rural areas of South Sudan where most of these young girls are unaware of this biological change as they are never prepared for it beforehand. When as young as twelve they start menstruating and being that the mere mention or discussion of this issue is considered a “TABOO” these girls are faced with improvising ways of dealing with the psychological and physical issues resulting from the lack of access to hygienic and sanitary products to effectively manage their menstruation.

The lack of these essential sanitary and hygienic products is detrimental to the education of a South Sudanese girl who unlike her male counter parts is not only faced by possible health issues that can result from the usage of rags cut from old clothing and leaves collected from trees used in the place of sanitary pads but suffers a greater blow when her education is interrupted on a monthly basis as she is forced to skip school each month for the duration of her whole cycle( 3-7 days) making it hard for her to catch up, compete or even succeed in completing her studies. The frustration of this constant and lengthy absence from school can in most cases lead these young women to lose motivation for studies, dropping out of school and opting for early marriage and at higher risk of teen pregnancy.

Solution

Freedom Pads Project will work with these girls and their communities to ensure that they are kept in school  giving them access to a care package comprising of two pairs of underwear, a bar of soap and four reusable sanitary pads this combined with the education which will be provided to them by the organisation on the correct use, storage and care for the items contained within their care package will ensure that these young women can overcome the stigma of
