Building "Free The Snake River" Canoe Family

Donation protected
Help Columbia River Indigenous peoples and salmon return to their ancestral highways by contributing to this fundraiser for a "Free The Snake River" canoe dedicated to cultural revitalization.

The canoe will be a representation of Indigenous unity for restoring the Snake River to a free-flowing river.

As support for Lower Snake River dam breaching grows, Indigenous communities will attach their flags to the canoe, to represent the support from the greater Tribal community for Lower Snake River dam breaching.

Every donation will be received with gratitude. Please consider a generous donation to our cause!

On our journey to restore our peoples relationship with our ancestral waterways, it has been difficult to have a canoe that can assist Indigenous grass-roots activists in their awareness raising efforts, while being safe for beginner use.

This canoe will be *beginner friendly* and used:

1) To safely train new paddlers in best practice water safety.
2) As a tool in work to restore salmon to the Columbia River watersheds.
3) To raise awareness about Lower Snake River dam breaching and salmon habitat restoration.
4) To participate in the 2019 and 2020 Columbia River canoe journeys.

We have four weeks to create our voyager canoe *in time for our annual Paddle to Kettle Falls*. This canoe will be used to raise awareness about the decline of salmon on the Lower Snake River. It will also raise awareness about the connection between the decline in human transportation on the Columbia River and the decline of salmon, lamprey and steelhead.

Canoeing is a way of life. This canoe will be purely used for activism and will be owned by the greater Indigenous activist community. It will be able to be used by request of Indigenous activists at difference flotillas, activist events, water safety trainings etc.

Background:

In 2020 Indigenous peoples aspire to produce a Columbia River Tribal Canoe Journey, raising awareness about dams and the difficulty they inflict on both people and salmon in traveling their ancestral highways.

To prepare, we are developing a “Free The Snake River” canoe family to pull in the Paddle to Kettle Falls this year.

To make it happen we need support.

By donating to a cause you will help:

a) Raise awareness about the impacts of dams on traditional canoeing and fish passage.

b) Help prepare for a 2020 Columbia River canoe journey from headwaters to Pacific Ocean!
