The backstory

We have an urgent need to collect legal funds to defend the son of one of our building's beloved and hard working door people, Danetta Bush, who received a call on Tuesday, February 26, saying her son had been shot by 4 or 5 Chicago police officers, and was in critical condition and taken to a hospital.

Her son, Flamingo Jones, is 38 years old, African-American, and the father of 3 daughters. Flamingo holds 2 jobs and lives in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago.

Relatives and witnesses say Jones was wounded when police were in pursuit of an alleged suspect (and) there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect running out of a car and police.

"What happened? He shouldn't have been shot when he walked out of the house on his way to see his daughter. Its not adding up," said Jennifer Evans, Jones' sister (2/27 ABC News)

Since February 26, Danetta has not been allowed to see Flamingo (as of March 5).

Due to the high cost of representing Flamingo at his next scheduled hearing, March 20 and subsequent trial, Flamingo's family is seeking funds to hire a respected and experienced defense attorney.

Without his own  legal defense, Flamingo will be assigned a public defendant (PD). In Chicago as elsewhere, PD's are overworked and lack the time and resources for a proper investigation of evidence, let alone, legal representation.

Our immediate and most important goal is to raise $10000 to retain a defense attorney, and to help Danetta Bush and family with the additional $45000 in legal fees which will be paid in time payments.
