FEED JOY

*In a remote farming valley in central Kenya, I fell in love. Her name was Joy and she was in kindergarten. Today, I want to tell you the story of how she was soaring at her little forgotten school but now she is stuck in COVID-19 and facing starvation. Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there. You can help!*

Hi! My name is Linda Higdon. I've been working in Kenya for nearly 20 years.  Just five years ago, my Kenyan friend, Lucy, and I launched the first school lunch program for Joy and her 250 classmates at Ribui Elementary in rural Kenya. The kids were sitting in class all day without a thing to eat, so they stopped coming. After all, who can learn on an empty belly? The school almost closed.  

 Education was their only lifeline out of poverty. We had to do something!  
                                                      That's when I discovered Joy.  

She captured my heart from the moment we first held hands in her kindergarten class. Somehow this little girl trusted me. I knew in a split second, “This was my girl.”
                             In that precious moment, I knew I could never let her down.  
  With lunch at school and full tummies of beans and rice every day, Joy and her classmates were healthy, wide-eyed and loving their classes. Their grades skyrocketed!
So, you can imagine the sad situation when COVID-19 struck. The school closed because of the virus. Joy stopped getting her precious school lunch. For most of the kids, this was their only meal all day.

     
Then, things got even worse. This year's harvest failed and the meager food supply in this isolated farming village is now quickly running out. 
                                 STARVATION is now a BIGGER THREAT than the VIRUS!

                                                    
When my friend Lucy, the school’s champion,  explained to me what Joy and her entire valley are going through because of COVID-19, I told her, “We are going to get you that food and make sure that not a single kid or family goes hungry!”

                                     I told her that  I know some amazing people who believe      
                                                              No child should ever go hungry!

Lucy and I will never give up! These kids and their families mean way too much to us.               So, we’ve created a simple yet powerful plan. (Isn’t that what women do?)

                                                        to feed all 250 kids and their families
                                                                 to get them through this crisis
