Faith and Wine Street Mural
Donation protected
We are a group of neighbors who are working hard, along side the City of Ashland, to create a community mural project at the intersection of Faith Avenue and Wine Street. We are excited to bring our vision to life and are asking for your help in raising the funds needed.
First, here is a little bit about us four women...
Sarah says, "I am currently working with Inner Guide Expeditions facilitating wilderness-based rites of passage for our youth. I am a gardener, dancer, singer and avid nature lover with a passion for bringing community together in support of inspiring endeavors that nurture our sense of connection and wellbeing."
Barbara says, "I am a retired ornithologist and an artist and have long enjoyed mixing birds with art and a community project like a street painting adds another element to the mix. Our neighborhood is diverse in ages and talents and we expect many enthusiastic participants. When our goals are realized, there will be a new, novel, and very attractive work of art that all can enjoy."
Kat says, "I’m a social and environmental justice advocate who has lived, worked, and thrived in Ashland since 2006. I’m a mom, community builder, and mental health counselor who loves to bicycle, hike, eat local, organic food, bird, dance, and laugh! I believe we can build resiliency as a community by engaging in projects that cultivate connection, compassion, and camaraderie."
And Rachel says, "I’m a dedicated mama of three kiddo’s, a passionate artist, enjoy gardening and homesteading (raising our five little ducklings right now). I also love being engaged with my community. My goal is to create a stronger and healthier community by collaborating together, doing creative neighborhood projects that establishes a feeling of kinship."
When we first came together, we had a vision of what we wanted, but most importantly, WHY we wanted to create a mural project. Here are some of the very awesome reasons behind our vision...
* Community based projects bring people together and help neighbors meet, connect, network to help break down socioeconomic barriers and segregation.
* Builds long-lasting mutual trust and feelings of connectedness among neighbors. Residents of “close-knit” neighborhoods may be more likely to work together to achieve other future common goals/projects.
* ART!!! Art is important. It makes you think, feel, and look, such as taking a moment to stop and appreciate something beautiful.
* Art feels good to MAKE!! It doesn’t just build bridges within the neighborhood…it’s cathartic! It has the power to engage you mentally and psychologically. It helps reduce stress, build self-esteem, and can help you process your own struggles.
* To encourage drivers to slow down and check out the art work, making our intersection safer for playing kiddos.
* The entire process of preparing and manifesting is fun and cultivates a strong community bond between neighbors. I also love that it strengthens the community’s sense of empowerment in our ability to collectively realize a shared vision.
* It is going to be so much prettier than plain old black top!
Finally, we want to share with you what your donation will go towards. With any major community project, there are costs involved. We will use your donation to help us purchase:
paint with skid-resistant walnut additive
rollers
roller pads
extention handles for rollers
rags/cloths for cleanup
LOTS of buckets for rinsing, storing paint, supplies, etc
brushes in various sizes
yardsticks/measuring tapes
masking tape
painting pallets for mixing color
stirring sticks
quality sidewalk chalk
As well as covering the costs for City Permits and Fees, and the rental for road signs and safety cones too.
I, Rachel, had the opportunity to design an intersection mural in Portland last summer. The final results of such an awesome project, speaks for itself...check out an example of what a community can do!
