On the morning of October 14th, 2025, I woke up to a very scary message, "Please call 911 for me." In the early morning, my mom had been assaulted by a man who swore to love her forever. It felt sudden, but this didn't come out of nowhere and this won't end in the near future. This incident began a long two-week period of protection orders, finding housing, finding a lawyer, and adjusting to life after losing her home and the love of her life. Not only that, my mom is taking care of my 9 year old brother who has had to figure out how to navigate 4th grade reading without knowing where he is going after school or if he has enough toothpaste to get through the week.

Now that they have housing, they have a new battle of furnishing the apartment and paying for a lawyer. Historically we know that the most dangerous time for a woman leaving a domestic violence relationship is the 18 months after leaving, and we have a long way to go. Protection orders, divorces, and custody are all among the most financially traumatic things you can go through - not including the 2 years of financial abuse that led up to this moment. My mom was left to pay the majority of the bills, which did not leave her with a lot of money to save.
