Dear Aggieland Safari Patrons & Guests,
As we all know, the COVID-19 crisis facing our community is not only negatively influencing the lives of those directly affected, but it also has contributed to financial challenges for individuals and businesses. Unfortunately, Aggieland Safari is now included in the temporary list of establishments who have had to close their doors in the interest of public safety. We are disappointed that guests will be unable to enjoy our Safari & Adventure Zoo for the temporary future, but encouraged to see our community working together to overcome this difficult time.
First and foremost, we would like to inform the public that our animals are our first priority. We are taking every step possible to ensure their health, happiness, and safety are not compromised. This includes meeting their daily nutritional requirements, cleaning exhibits, and providing adequate behavioral enrichment.
Often times, the industries directly associated with animal care and welfare (such as zoos, veterinary clinics, animal shelters, etc.) are forgotten in terms of “essential personnel”. But unfortunately, a community quarantine does not negate the need for our animals’ daily care. While many of you are able to work from home, the Aggieland Safari Animal Care and Veterinary Team does not have that capability. In the past, we have relied heavily upon the support of our Keeper Interns to assist our staff with daily tasks associated with caring for over 500 animals; however, we now must utilize a crew of only 2-3 keepers per day to ensure minimal contact. This will be an arduous task for our caretakers as they face an increased workload with a possibly reduced total allotted work hours. Zoos across the country are taking similar precautions to reduce their staff to a “skeleton crew” for an unknown duration of time; thereby, leaving a sense of uneasiness in many people’s minds as to how they will financially support their families.
The Aggieland Safari Management team is blessed beyond measure to have dedicated employees ready to face this difficult time head on, and does not take their sacrifice and dedication for granted. We hope to mitigate many of these anxieties with the help of our supporters by providing ways to make charitable donations. All funds from sales and donations will go directly to supporting our staff and animal’s livelihoods.
We hope the community will rally around the Aggieland Safari Zoo Crew as you have done so many times before, and thank you for your continued support and prayers.
