Creating Safe Spaces for BIPOC in New Mexico

Donation protected

Mujeres Valley Campground (MVC) was founded by Asad and IxChel in 2017 when we secured more land than we've ever seen to be the central location for our new community efforts! We've been creating and setting the foundation for this effort since we migrated to Colorado in 2013.  Since we left California, our sole mission has been to find our roots, live on the land of our ancestors, connect with the communities where we have direct ancestral lineage and give our talents & resources to protect and build safe spaces for BIPOC.

We have set aside 20 acres of the 63 acres we purchased and have been setting the infrastructure & foundation for this safe space geared toward the travel, healing, and support of BIPOC. People of color have been restricted from purchasing and visiting land in this area of Cibola County, New Mexico for the last 100 years. We experienced that discrimination 1st hand and have officially won back full ownership pf the land that the campground sits on! Now it's our mission to make sure this area remains accessible to BIPOC and we remain here to be a resource for BIPOC who want to buy land in this area.

Aside from maintaining this land as a safe space, we have opportunities available for those who are interested in having the support to research their roots, genealogy, connect with their relatives and tribes, live closer to the Earth, off-grid, and in a community of people who will support your personal and professional endeavors! We are confident in our abilities to help others overstand each other so the community is open to all ethnicities and cultures of people.

Together we plan to create a community of unity for those of you who have been looking for it! Any donation you can offer helps us build the foundation for this vision! We've been working endlessly to establish the campground parking area, clear trees for wider RVs to be able to pull through, clearing trails & dead trees to open more large camping spaces for visitors. And boy have we had visitors this year! We re-opened the campground in January 2021 and we've met people from all over the country!

Over the last 4 years we've been working on finishing up our first tiny home and we have (for the most part haha)!! But that's not all we've been up to! We've also purchased a couple trailers for close guests, started raising chickens, learned to incubate/hatch our own eggs, and build a greenhouse that can withstand the winter! But we still have a ton of work to do! We've made some local connections with a few grocery stores and restaurants that would like to carry locally grown produce so we need more greenhouses.

One of our major needs is FENCING! Sounds crazy, it's not something we ever thought would be a priority but we've learned that when BIPOC own land it's very hard for people who want what you have to stay off your land. Additionally, we have a pack of 8 dogs that we want to make sure are not running onto people's properties and getting into anything they're not supposed to be. Plus, our plans are to be able to process our chickens for meat, add goats for milk, cheese and meat, ANNND grow more fruits and vegetables all year.

This work also aligns with another family-owned farm in Arizona called Southwest Black Ranchers. We have been working with them to begin establishing and funding a BIPOC-owned food chain across the United States to support farmers and ranchers across the country. The food shortage brought on by COVID-19 deserves a solution and Southwest Black Ranchers left their home in California to buy a plot of land geared toward raising healthy food and protein and they have some amazing plans for the BIPOC that is about this life!! We're honored and excited to be working with them on this endeavor.

All funding contributions collected through this effort will assist us with purchasing the materials we're not able to mill and finish some structures, purchase a 1500 gallon water tank, purchase materials to build on to the existing greenhouse to be able to house more food and purchase everyday homesteading tools like drip irrigation, hoses, insulation, shovels, etc. We've purchased some of these items over the years but that terrain out here on the mountain is TOUGH. The land is heavy wooded so we're constantly purchasing gas to run the chainsaw to clear old trees blocking unused trails and there are a ton of volcanic rock that we've tried digging up only to lose tools here and there.

In 2022 we plan to restore several natural pond areas to be able to collect and retain water so we can begin our wildlife restoration project. In 2021 we were able to restore and maintain a pond in front of our homestead and make a home for thousands of tadpoles/frogs! Next year we plan to be much more prepared and intentional about mapping out these natural areas so we can make this new biosystem available on the campground and without harming or taking away from any of the properties around us!

We need your support and we need your voice! We are advocating for BIPOC rights to purchase land without discrimination or harassment, cannabis rights, and social equity in all areas. We are actively doing the work in the community and if you have question or are in need to some guidance on something you think we can help with we urge you to donate when, and as often, as you can.
