Zeal for Mt. Zion: WR Cemetery, 2021
Donation protected
Update 7/8/21: Our original goal of $4000 has been met! However, the need still remains for increasing our upkeep/contingency fund so that it can cover several years' worth of mowing expenses if needed, and so it can address unforeseen issues like this summer's two episodes of vandalism. Thus, the goal is being raised by $6000 to a 2021 total of $10,000; Corresponding Secretary Harthorn is also increasing his match rate from 1:1 to 2:1 for individual donations through the end of the year as well (with the matching funds still earmarked for an endowment fund for the cemetery). Accordingly, a $50 donation would thus now result in a cumulative contribution of $150!
-------
The Mt. Zion Cemetery Association continues to forge a stronger future for this historic Walnut Ridge cemetery, in a myriad of ways. In January, records of 63 previously unknown unmarked burials were discovered in a collection of early 20th-century Arkansas death certificates, raising the number of known burials in the cemetery by 20%. Other projects are in the works for the remainder of this year; be sure to check our website (www.mtzionwr.org) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/mtzionwr) every now and then for updates!
As we look to continue this momentum, it remains an inescapable fact that, even with an all-volunteer Association, the expenses of mowing and maintaining a 2.75 acre cemetery are considerable. Thus, any donation to the association you would be able to provide, large or small, would be greatly appreciated. All donations (Goal: $2,000+) will go to the Association's checking account for Mt. Zion Cemetery upkeep in 2021 and beyond. The Association's corresponding secretary, Edward Harthorn, will provide a 1:1 match of individuals' donations, which will be earmarked for an endowment fund for the cemetery (for a cumulative goal of $4000+ raised for the cemetery in 2021).
Donations can be made on this GoFundMe or can also be mailed to: Mt. Zion Cemetery Association, c/o Treasurer Jerry Gibbens, 306 Eastwood Circle, Walnut Ridge, AR, 72476.
