What is The Zahra Foundation?
Zahra facilitates opportunities and teaches workshops around the importance of creating items of worth out of re-purposed and reclaimed materials and the value of handwork. The work and intention of our foundation has extraordinary environmental, cultural, and economic benefits.  Presently, we are working in Egypt; unfortunately one of the most polluted places in the world, yet fortunately a place for incredible potential.

Working specifically with thin-film plastic bags and plastic water bottles, Zahra partners with local Egyptian NGOs, schools, businesses, tour companies, and/or governmental agencies to sponsor workshops in various locations around Egypt. Participants are shown how to create items of worth, practicality, and beauty such as bags, rugs, and baskets from an abundant and free raw material. Opportunities such as these provide the basic skills and tools one needs to create something out of free material, once on its way to a landfill, thus encouraging economic and environmental development as they physically transform the trash into useful objects without the need for infrastructure and very minimal investment.

How Your Financial Contributions Support Our Work:
In the Spring of 2015, the Zahra Foundation will undertake it’s 5th completed project in Egypt.  Funds raised will cover the work we do in Cairo, Bahariya, and villages near Aswan and Luxor. We will offer workshops to those women and youth who are interested in handwork and learning with us how to transform plastic bags into products of worth.

Additionally, on this trip Zahra is sponsoring an intern and her chaperon from Cario to join us in Bahariya Oasis. She is an elder girl from Banati Center for girls in street situations who has been working with crochet and the plarn (plastic yarn created from bags). We are excited to offer her the opportunity to travel in her own country and teach with Zahra. A projected goal for our foundations future is to inspire and empower the people we’ve had the privilege to work with, to continue this work on their own.

How past Funding aided sustainable business for our Egyptian participants:

In November 2014, Indigo secured a business agreement for some of the women in Bahariya and one of the travel agencies in Cairo. These oasis ladies are now actively creating water bottle holders that will be purchased by the tour company. They will then give these holders with a bottle of water to their tour participants when they arrive in Egypt. This direct line of commerce directly helps the women, their families, and communities. We will continue to work in Bahariya with the intention to help them form a women's cooperative as well as do outreach to do similar work in the other communities we visit.
