Carol Vorderman told us backstage: "Milk it for all it’s worth!"

We’ve set up this official fund to give 13-year-old Zac Howells a proper head start in life—whether that’s his driving lessons, his first car, or his future education and career.

On Saturday, December 14th, what started as a festive trip to the Birmingham Christmas markets nearly turned into a tragedy for 12-year-old Zac and his mum, Nicola, from Ebbw Vale.

While driving at 60mph along the A40 Ross-on-Wye dual carriageway, Nicola suddenly suffered a medical emergency and lost consciousness behind the wheel. As she fainted, her foot remained pressed on the accelerator, causing the car to speed up with no one in control.

In a moment of pure instinct and bravery, Zac didn't panic. He reached over, grabbed the steering wheel, and guided the car into a safety barrier to bring it to a halt before switching off the engine and calling 999.

"Mum, it’s alright... I’m worried about you, not me."

In the emergency call released by the police, Zac stayed remarkably calm for the call handler despite being terrified. Once the vehicle stopped, his immediate concern wasn't for himself—it was for his mum. As she regained consciousness, he tenderly reassured her, holding her hand while waiting for help.

West Mercia Police honored Zac with a Chief Constable’s Commendation, praising his incredible composure. His split-second decision-making saved his mum's life and kept everyone else on the road safe that day.

Despite all the national press, TV interviews, and awards, Zac remains completely humble and insists he doesn't see it as a "big deal." But everyone who hears his story knows what he did was nothing short of heroic.

Where Your Support Goes:

We want to channel the huge wave of support from the public into a lasting foundation for Zac as he grows up. Every single donation will go directly into a secure savings fund to help support his future—including his driving lessons, first car, and education.

Zac saved a life that day. Any contribution, big or small, helps us show this incredible young man just how proud we all are of him.

Thank you so much for your generosity and support! ❤️
