Help Jamaica Recover from Hurricane Melissa — From Someone Who’s Been There
Hi, I’m Loycent Gordon, a proud Jamaican and the owner of Neir’s Tavern, New York City’s oldest bar — and one of America’s oldest community taverns.
When I saw the images of Hurricane Melissa, it hit me deeply — because I’ve lived through it before.
As a child in Jamaica, I survived Hurricane Gilbert, a storm so powerful it nearly took my life. I remember the fear, the chaos, and the heartbreak of seeing homes and lives destroyed. I know what it feels like to lose everything overnight.
That’s why I can’t just stand by. Jamaica was hit by Hurricane Melissa at Category 5 strength, and people are now without power, homes, food, or clean water.
As someone who believes “Community Conquers All,” I’m asking our extended family — from Woodhaven to Jamaica — to act fast during these critical first 72 hours after the storm, when help means survival.
This is Phase One of our relief effort — a quick, direct way to make a real impact.
All funds from this GoFundMe will go directly to World Central Kitchen (WCK)
, the nonprofit founded by Chef José Andrés, already on the ground providing fresh meals and emergency relief to hurricane survivors.
How You Can Help:
1️⃣ Donate now — every dollar helps feed families in need
2️⃣ Join us Saturday, November 1st @ 8PM at Neir’s Tavern for our Jamaica Relief Karaoke Fundraiser and reggae vibes
3️⃣ Or stop by earlier for our Saturday Jazz Brunch (2–4PM) — every plate supports relief
This cause is personal to me. Jamaica is my home, and I know firsthand how long it takes to rebuild after a storm like this.
Thank you for helping me send love, food, and hope to the island that raised me.
