Over a year ago, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we -a group of students from Alfrink College Zoetermeer- together with some of our teachers, set up the Food4India initiative to aide the families associated with our partner school in India, the Jagriti Public School, which is part of the local NGO Street Survivors India. Thanks to your generous donations we were able to raise over €4300 in just a few weeks which provided over 200 families with food and sanitary items for more than a month.

The first lockdown measures caused major unemployment and mass famine in the school’s region. Supported by Street Survivors India, this area became a central hub purchasing food supplies in bulk for distribution as care packets for families, even to the most remote areas of West-Bengal using school busses as transport trucks.

As we have all seen in the news, a second wave of Covid-19 infections has hit India very hard. The daily rate of infection is the highest in the world, over 300,000 per day, hospitals are unable to keep up with the incoming flow of patients, there is a shortage of oxygen and many people are dying. To try and combat the rising infection rates the Government of India is expanding their roll out Covid-19 vaccines to the population.

Starting from May 1st, all persons 18yrs and older are eligible to receive a vaccine. Although vaccines are meant to be provided for free via State and Private hospitals, most are attaching fees to cover the costs of procuring vaccines from the government. The fees being charged for the Astra Zeneca vaccine are about 300 rupees (€3) per person. While this may not seem like a lot, for those living in extreme poverty it is too expensive which means they will not be able to get the vaccines they need to protect against infection with Covid-19.

We have received the urgent request to help from our partner school, the Jagriti Public School. The underprivileged families within their region, supported by Street Survivor India, need to get vaccinated and receive a few days of food to rest after receiving a shot.

A donation of €5 will cover the following for one person:

- Two shots of Astra Zeneca = 300 rupees.
- Food for 3 days—rice, dal, potatoes, and local fruits = 250 rupees

With your help we can make a difference like we did a year ago! So please donate and share our initiative with your friends and family! Everything helps!

We’ve done it once before, now let’s do it again!

Food4India was set up by Joachim, Eva, Max, Amy, Indra and Mette, a group of students from 5 bilingual VWO last school year at the Alfrink College at the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

As a follow up to the successful efforts from last year, and our Model United Nations Alfrink (MUNA—www.munalfrink.nl) conference charity event where students also raised €400 for Street Survivors India, we are reopening our GoFundMe page and the Food4India initiative. This renewed effort is a collaboration of MUNA student staff with a few teachers and general students at Alfrink College. Our goal is to raise €10,000 by the end of the school year in mid-July.

We are working in partnership with Every Life Counts, a Dutch NGO, to help with administrative and planning matters.
