YSYF 2021 Feeding & Iftar Program (CLOSED)
Donation protected
Last year, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we reached out about the acute feeding challenges faced by folks in the rural area of Shai-Osudoku, Ghana. Many of you opened your hearts and wallets, and together we donated a total of 1,300 meals over the course of 2020. Your generosity has touched our hearts and the lives of many.
What does my donation do?
This year, we are humbly asking you to give again. This month of Ramadan (April-May), we are organizing another feeding and iftar program for the folks most affected by food insecurity. We are prioritizing our distribution to those who are elderly, have disabilities, are breastfeeding or otherwise socioeconomically disadvantaged. We have set our target at $2,400, to distribute to 80 families at a cost of $30 per hamper. These hampers contain vegetables, rice, mackerel, oil, tomato paste and spices, which is enough to feed a family of ten for a day. In order to distribute on time, we are collecting all funds by May 5th, 2021.
Why is my donation needed?
The effects of the pandemic are still being felt by residents in Shai-Osudoku, due to lost wages, an unstable economy, inflation and growing geographic inequalities. The rural location of this community means that nutritious food is difficult to access, and in some cases almost 2-3 times more expensive. In the majority cases, families eat only one or two meals a day, often consisting of banku (fermented corn and cassava) with soup. Sometimes, corn dough or dry fish is also consumed. As we know, this diet is not enough to meet the nutritional needs of most adults and children.
Many families have been reaching out to us for support, and about half are observing Ramadan with very little to break their fast. These feeding challenges are very real, and underpin many other barriers to access residents experience, including education, health problems and high rates of adolescent pregnancy.
We hope that you will find it in your hearts to lend your support to this community.
