YPFDJ Shining a Light on She'eb

Merhaba btsot! Please join YPFDJ (Young People’s Front for Democracy and Justice) in raising the funds to provide solar panels to 300 homes, health centers, and stores in the town of She’eb. The cost for each panel is $110 + Installation, shipment & accessories.

Below is the history and how She’eb is a symbol of the Eritrean people.

The history of She’eb, a town in the northeastern part of Eritrea, about 40 miles north of the port city of Massawa, on the Red Sea, reflects, in many ways, the history of Eritrea as a whole--- in its defiant attitude and undaunted spirit in the face of Ethiopia’s repeated naked aggression and unprecedented brutality during the war of independence (1961-1991) as well as the so-called Border War (1998-2000).

Eritrea suffered a series of horrific massacres perpetrated by Ethiopia’s armed forces throughout the 30-year conflict. She’eb was one of the sites that saw some of these mass killings, including one of the most gruesome incidents that took place there three years before the war of liberation ended in 1991. On May 12, 1988, the Ethiopian army massacred more than 400 innocent civilians, mostly women and children, in retaliation for a major defeat in Afabet at the hands of the Eritrean Peoples Liberation Army—a defeat that proved to be a turning point in the history of the Eritrean-Ethiopian conflict. Many of the victims were crushed to death by tanks, while the rest were shot indiscriminately.

She’eb also symbolizes the can-do optimism and spirit of self-reliance of the Eritrean people in their fierce determination to rebuild the war-shattered economy and meet all the other post-conflict challenges so they can fully realize the promise of independence. She’eb has been the site of many public and private development programs. Even while the war was underway, it was one of the centers picked for land-reform experimentation; during the post-conflict period, the area has also been the site of similar programs, such as the Wadi Development Project designed to help the farmers by improving the irrigation systems in the Eastern Lowlands of the country.

So, the proposed solar project is a continuation of She’eb’s pioneering legacy in the search for answers to the challenges of development.
