Our Story
The humanitarian environment in Sudan has deteriorated over the past two years, with new, conflict-induced internal displacement in Darfur. About 400,000 new internally displaced people (IDPs) were registered between January and August 2014 in the country. According to UN figures, 6.9 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Sudan. In 2015, the influx from South Sudan is expected to continue, with the current estimate at 130,000 South Sudanese refugees by the first few months.
Our organization, the Southern Sudanese Community Center of San Diego is a non-profit 501(c)(3) founded in 1995 with the mission to assist all Sudanese refugees in their resettlement through education, social, economic, and cultural support. We guide them towards self-sufficiency and full integration into American society while respecting their dignity as new Americans. Most of our staff are unpaid volunteers who dedicate their time and service to helping refugee communities.
We also provide aid to Children in Southern Sudan as many Southern Sudanese children in Africa are orphans who have lost one or both parents due to war and genocide. Therefore, we support these children with medical, educational aid and meeting other basic life needs.
Essentially, the SSCCSD provides support for those who have immigrated from war torn South Sudan. Here, in San Diego, there are approximately 6,000 Southern Sudanese refugees. They have been forced to leave their country because of ongoing religious, ethnic and political persecution, and we act as a helping hand or a bridge between the familiar and the unknown.
Our Goal
The Youth Sports Program at SSCCSD requires organization, planning and finalization of arrangements of outdoor activities and sports for youth in the Southern Sudanese Community in San Diego. To help promote and realize the objectives of wellness, mental and physical health among youth between the ages of eight to thirteen in the community, funding is of immediate necessity; therefore, we are kindly asking for a helping hand and assistance in the name of humanity, love and compassion. Also, children and adolescents hold the future of the world in their hands, which stresses the need for their empowerment. They are innocent and should be supported to the best of our abilities. While some of them have not yet experienced the hardships of life, some of them have seen their families and homes torn apart from war in their home country. To protect them, we have to work towards instilling hope in their hearts and positive visions in their minds, and we believe that small things make a difference, which is why we are proposing a youth sports program for our youth.
Activities include exercise in sports such as soccer, basketball and tournaments for respective sports. Fundamentally, transportation from the community center to various sports arenas – basketball or soccer fields – is needed. The means of transportation include drivers as well as vans to accommodate all children and young adolescents. The next step is to set up the games, provide the children with sports team clothing, appropriate sports shoes and all equipment necessary - and team spirit is to be encouraged via a sports coach supported by the community. Furthermore, refreshments and light food will be provided during break time.
The activities will take place every Saturday afternoon or evening in San Diego, within close proximity to City Heights and the community center. The community leaders involved hold the trust of the parents of the children and have been trained to deal with emergency situations to respond to basic medical needs to guarantee the safety of the children while playing, so emergency kits to enable the safety and health for the total number of children in the team are of necessity.
Eight months of such strategic planning and enforcement involves high costs, of which we have estimated to be $10,000. Any sort of contribution, promotion and support is highly appreciated.
