Here in Glover Park, the main intersection by Stoddert Elementary School is guarded by Ms. Debra Walker. Ms. Deb not only keeps our kids safe as they go to and from school every day, she knows their names, their siblings names, and even their favorite kind of candy. She is also the president of the crossing guard / safety technician union of Washington, DC! As president, she is the union representative and advocates for fellow school crossing guards who are stationed throughout DC and DCPS schools.
When COVID-19 hit, the hours for DC's crossing guards were cut, and their pay was reduced. However, because they were deemed "essential workers," they were ineligible to receive unemployment. During these uncertain and challenging times, Ms. Deb, as union president, has been working tirelessly to make sure her 300 officers have their basic needs met: rent, utilities, and food. Many of these workers lack a financial safety net and can not afford any reduction in pay.
So...
We are looking to raise $15,000, enough to purchase $50 worth of groceries for the crossing guards and have it delivered to their door. While $50 does not go far in a traditional grocery store, we have an opportunity to procure nutritious produce and other staples at cost and we have volunteers to make all the deliveries. Together we can make a difference.
With guidance from Ms Deb, any money raised over our goal will be used to help the crossing guards in most need with utility bills / rent. Ms Deb will also help with identifying crossing guards who would benefit most with a cash donation rather than grocery deliveries.
Ms. Deb, you've been here for us, and we're going to be here for you and your team.
