Almost two years ago, we (Nic Roc & Stacy Keck) built You Belong Here -- a collaborative work & community event space in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego.
A place to collaborate, connect, and learn.
We’re best known for our open concept co-working space, photography and podcasting studio, and our unique ability to guide and connect each other through collaboration and discussion. We created a place where artists, photographers, writers and entrepreneurs could practice their craft, build their businesses, learn from each other, and be together.
Our co-working, photography, and podcasting studio was just the gateway. In 2019, we put the four pillars of our mission (Space, Education, Community, Culture) into motion, and the recipe yielded something powerful beyond measure.
With your participation, your teachings, and nurturing, at many of our free events, You Belong Here has evolved into a radically inclusive space -- a forum to spread new ideas and a place to challenge existing narratives, showcase artwork, and celebrate the vast cultural richness with our community. You helped us foster authentic interactions between people and inspire self-growth.
It has been an absolute honor to become a space that collaborates with local community leaders and witness you thrive and grow. We’ve hosted free community programming that gives a voice and empowers those who are often overlooked/excluded; from art shows to documentary screenings, panel discussions, open mic nights, community discussion groups (“Elephant Talks”), Drag Queen Story Hour, Mastermind meetings and more.
A community is too heavy to carry alone.
To see our dream come to fruition and then be put at risk because of this pandemic, is devastating. We’ve found ourselves in a bit of a tough spot and we need your help. You Belong Here may have to close its doors permanently. Due to COVID-19, we’ve lost 100% of our income because we’ve had to close our space to our co-working members and other people in the community who use our space for photo shoots, podcasting and private events. Like many other small businesses, we haven’t had much luck securing funding from the many local or federal relief programs.
We want to keep this space alive and we want the stories that you’ve shared to live on. YBH represents so much of what we all need in community: a space for connection, creativity, soul, togetherness, familiarity, and empowerment.
We’d appreciate your generosity to help us meet our rent, insurance, legal, and utility obligations for the next few months. We're also taking into consideration the costs associated with purchasing supplies that will help us meet reopening guidelines, such as: air purifiers, cleaning supply stations and personal protective equipment for staff and visitors.
We’ll be here for you.
In 2019, our first year in operation, we cultivated, created, and curated 57 events, all with you in mind.
You matter to us. Our community matters. There will be more stories that need to be told, more obstacles to overcome, and we hope that You Belong Here can continue being that support and platform.
