'Be the change you want to see in the world.' (Ghandi)
Yoga Fusion is a research project aiming at bringing psychological and physical health to people affected by trauma in conflict areas. Refugees, war victims, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) suffer more and more of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) being deprived of their health and ability to contribute to their family and community. Through yoga therapy for PTSD and community workshops to map social conflicts and needs, Yoga Fusion aims at reintroducing community health, participation and justice through an accessible, low cost and sustainable tool: yoga. Working on the ground in conflict affected areas, Yoga Fusion brings new perspectives on health and ‘consciousness-raising’ at individual and social level.
How you will help?
Developing and supporting local knowledge and holistic skills within local communities.
Helping experts from different backgrounds to come together and find new ways of working.
Broadening the impact of local good practices and global researches.
Advocating for the introduction of holistic policies at international level.
Why Yoga Fusion?
Policy recommendations of UN Agencies, NGOs and research centers are advocating for more holistic and participatory approaches addressing trauma and reconciliation in post-conflict contexts. However there are no evidence-based approaches to influence global public policies and their implementation on the matter. Yoga Fusion’s contribution to global health and conflict studies is considering individual health in a holistic manner that includes participation and justice at community level. Yoga is a metaphor and a tool to suggest how holistic approaches to human development and capabilities should be introduced to empower individuals and recreate individual responsibility towards the self and the community in post conflict contexts where these patterns are challenged, and human security is threatened.
Why supporting this campaign?
At this stage, I developed Yoga Fusion's theoretical framework and established a multidisciplinary Participatory Action Research Network of academic institutions and practitioners that volunteer their time, knowledge and resources to contribute to this project. Yoga Fusion is currently not an NGO, but a network of which I am the coordinator and leading researcher. This crowd-funding campaign will support the sustainability of the project by ensuring availability of resources for research and pilot project implementation. In the next three years I want Yoga Fusion to become an umbrella organization for holistic yoga-based approaches to trauma healing, human security, sustainable use of local resources in conflict situations, and nonviolent conflict transformation.
'When you begin doing the work you are meant to do, unexpected resources will find you.' (Infinite Vision)
I master the different areas of expertise that this multidisciplinary project brings together: from development economics, to conflict studies, and yoga therapy. I have the support of yoga therapy research institutions and universities, and a growing network of practitioners interested in the project. In eight years of field experience I realized that the low success rate of projects I followed with UN Agencies and NGOs were not only determined by maintenance costs and poorly handled political changes. The reason of low success rate was highly socio-psychological: there are patterns that even when recognized as wrong are hard to change. This is when I realized that I had to explore more my passion for Yoga, as it a low cost tool to deconstruct discourses of action and reaction, mainly in relation to individual trauma and social conflict transformation.
