The only items these kiddos have asked me for since I’ve arrived here in Ghana are backpacks and notebooks (and one soccer ball for the entire school, which I’ve already purchased). The way they ask you, with such kindness and longing in their hearts, makes me straight up tear up. I’m not even a little bit ashamed to admit that. It’s heartbreaking. I mean, they just want a friggin’ backpack for school. They’ll come pull me aside and whisper to me, “Obroni (foreigner), school bag for me, please.” They aren’t asking for Xboxes or iPhones, just school supplies. These kids are so unbelievably sweet and kind and happy with the prettiest, handsomest smiles you’ll ever see anywhere. They don’t treat you any differently for being an outsider in their country. I know I absolutely can’t change this messed up world at all. I am but a small drop in a vast, messed up ocean. But maybe I can change this one school, maybe I can help a few kids, maybe I can do something in this world, damn it. Please consider donating. Even a small amount goes a long way in Ghana.
