Hi, my name is Butterfly. I also go by the name Olivia Whelan. I am a writer, actor and artist, and I am the project developer for a photography series called, “Nothing is Perfect” (previously titled "Finding Balance"). If you've already watched the video and you know the spiel on "Nothing is Perfect," you can jump to paragraph four where I outline how our fundraising dollars will be spent. If you don't know the spiel, then keep reading: “Nothing is Perfect'' is directed by my spiritual teacher, Guru Enlightment, and it features stunning photographs taken by four New York artists: Susan Dorf, Marie Leila Douaihi, Tobias Everke, and Johnathan Fernández . This series is a comprehensive examination of the evolving roles of women over the past seventy years, and it explores all of the complexities and contradictions of femininity in America.
As a female, I’ve always felt pressure to be everything the world wanted me to be. This created deep feelings of inadequacy and contributed significantly to my already present depressive and anxious tendencies.
After years of working on myself (and working with Guru - you can learn more about her in the video), I realized two things: one, I did not have to be perfect, and two, almost every woman I knew felt overwhelmed and burdened by the world’s expectations of them. If these feelings are so universal, then why are they seldom addressed?
“Nothing is Perfect” examines these expectations put upon us by the world. We also examine the plight of marginalized women whom the world has completely forgotten about. After two years of production, we have our images and they are ready to be displayed. This brings us to the next phase of “Nothing is Perfect,” which is showcasing these photos in a New York City art gallery with an opening night reception. In addition, I will be releasing a retrospective book to go along with the exhibit, also called, “Nothing is Perfect.” I’m now looking to raise $5,000 to cover the expenses of putting up a photography show in the city. These expenses include printing costs, mounting and framing costs, signage, transportation, space rental fees, the printing and publishing of “Nothing is Perfect” the retrospective book, and any other unanticipated expenses. We believe that this exhibit has the potential to make a significant impact and raise awareness. With your support, we can bring this important message to a wider audience and help create a more inclusive and equitable future for all women.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about “Finding Balance.” Any funding, video shares, or good vibes that you send our way are deeply felt and appreciated. I’ll see you opening night.
