Juna is a 24-year old surf instructor, a fisherman and a hardworking family man from a small Indonesian village in South Lombok.

He is always one to help another, to spread positive energy and to share a smile even at the end of a difficult day.

We met Juna back in 2020, when we stayed in Lombok for about 2 years due to Covid. At only 18 years of age and with a 6-month old baby at home, Juna was our best support in the water while we were learning how to surf, and always ready to be of service to his traveller friends.

As the years have gone by, we've been going back to Lombok, and every time we've been welcomed warmly by Juna and his family. We went from holding his little babygirl Kiki to dancing Baby Shark with her, to trying to attend all her local birthday parties and community ceremonies.

Juna and his family live in a fishing village that in recent years has gained popularity as a surf destination. Whether it's fishing or surf-related, almost every family's livelihood is dependent on a reliable boat.

Juna and his wife Ulan have been working hard to create a better future for their little family. It is due to their hard work that they were able to buy their first boat to aid in slowly building the future of their dreams.

Juna works as a coach at a local surf camp and Ulan takes on every cleaning and cooking job she can while still taking full care of Kiki.

Their giving nature, their love for people, compassion and kindness have always been so important for us to feel welcome in these far off lands, that's why helping them feels like the only way possible. They are like family.

They worked for years to be able to buy their own boat, to go fishing and take out students to surf. One day, after a storm, Juna came to the beach and their boat was no longer there. He spent weeks looking for it, in different beaches, in mangroves, but the boat was gone.

To no surprise, Juna took that defeat with a big and powerful smile. Something we had never seen from anyone in the West after losing something of such big importance.
