Iris is a 5 ½ year old American Staffordshire Terrier.

In 2023 she was taken in as a Welfare Rescue by Police from a house

where she was used solely as a breeding dog. Her ears had been cut

off, she had a prolapsed uterus, and she had pressure sores on her

ankles.

She was moved to Kennels and eventually was on her way to the Carla

Laine Animals In Need (CLAIN) rescue centre, where she was looked

after and placed in Foster Care until she could be permanently rehomed.

In September 2024, Mum and Dad were looking for a companion for

their other rescue dog Rocco, a Mastiff, and came across Iris at CLAIN.

Rocco and Iris got on so well, Iris became the newest family member the

next week.

Over the past 10 years, Mum and Dad have taken in 7 rescue dogs.

Mainly large, old dogs, many with problems, and have loved every one

of them, but constantly stumbled with getting sufficient cover from pet

insurers for these lovely animals who deserved all the care and love they

could get. None of them have had a good start, and Mum and Dad

ensure they need never suffer again.

Pet Insurance is always difficult with Rescue animals:

Rescue dogs are not always puppies, and very often come with previous

conditions, and newly diagnosed conditions identified by the Rescue

Centre Vet screening checks.

Pet Insurer’s do not consider that you have rescued an animal in need,

and that you have had no opportunity to identify a new condition as it

arises. Pet Insurers use the clause on Pre-existing Condition and

therefore anything related to it at any future time means you cannot

claim cover from an insurer.

Iris had a slight twinge in her Left (rear) knee, and in a very short period

of time, was walking normally. 6 months later she developed a limp in

her Right rear leg.

This resulted in her needing Surgery to treat ligament damage,

meniscus damage, and tibial growths, requiring a TPLO.

Our insurers will not cover the Right leg as there was mention of a pre-

existing condition in her Left leg.

On further examination, she now also requires the same surgery on her

Left Leg.

The Surgery and subsequent requirements cost approximately £5000

per leg. Mum and Dad need to raise funds for Iris’ surgery.

If Go Fund Me is successful and raises beyond the costs, any further

balance will be paid to CLAIN, where they got Iris from, and Pet Blood

Bank, where Iris is now a Donor. These places are not as well-known as

some other animal charity-funded services, and don’t get as much

publicity, but they provide a vital service for animals in need.
