In response to the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and countless others as a result of racially motivated violence towards Black people in the United States, Yale student groups aim to mobilize the wider Yale community to donate to organizations fighting for justice. We have united under the name of Yale Together and we believe that our collective influence exceeds that of any single one of us.

The recent protests have opened up a critical dialogue about the structural inequities present in our society. From police brutality to COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on Black and Indigenous people, an urgent response is needed. This difficult time requires that we demonstrate solidarity amongst our communities, so alongside fundraising to address racism against Black people, we will also be fundraising for COVID-19 relief to the Navajo Nation, which has the highest COVID-19 infection rate in the country.

Yale Together has pledged over $20,000, and we are asking our communities to match this donation. The donations from this fundraiser will be split evenly amongst these organizations solving pressing issues in the Black community and Navajo Nation:

Black Visions Collective  - Through the development of powerful social campaigns, BLVC expands the power of Black people across the Twin Cities metro area and Minnesota. This can look like delivering mobilization and action goals as part of a national coalition in which Black lives are centered, but it most often looks like visioning and leading targeted collaborative local campaigns that advance a concrete impact for people’s lives in MN, while also advancing a shift in public narrative that connects to transformative long-term change.)

Connecticut Bail Fund  - Pays bail for people who are being caged due to poverty, organize in opposition to the incarceration and deportation of community members, and educate and advocate towards a radical vision for safety, justice, and healing. To date, they have freed over 415 people from pretrial and immigration detention

Black Lives Matter  - #BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives.

Navajo & Hopi Families COVID Relief Fund  - Helps the elderly (especially those raising their grandchildren), the immunocompromised and mobility impaired, single parents, and struggling families by helping them buy groceries, water, health supplies, and necessary items so they (and their vulnerable communities) can be protected from exposure to the virus by engaging volunteers to make these purchases and deliver them to a safe transfer location for our beneficiaries. Also helping to stop the spread of COVID-19 on these reservations by engaging volunteers to sew masks for medical workers and first responders on Navajo and Hopi.

Greater New Haven COVID Community Fund  - The Greater New Haven COVID-19 Community Fund was established on March 20, 2020 by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven in partnership with the United Way of Greater New Haven as a community-wide effort to raise money to help Greater New Haven's nonprofit organizations and the thousands of people in our region they serve affected by COVID-19. The two institutions are working together in promoting the fund to donors and in decision-making as to grants from the fund.
