Help Magpie Mead Stay Afloat!
Donation protected
Greetings Friends,
I am reaching out to our community and crowdfunding for our friend and beloved mead maker, Magpie (Steve Merr) of Magpie Mead. If you have been to a festival or a ren faire in the NY area (and beyond), you have most likely enjoyed some of Magpie's mead.
Magpie Mead is a one man operation in upstate NY. Steve has been making mead for more than two decades at his home, Magpie Farm. At the end of December Steve travelled down to Brooklyn to care for his fragile and elderly mom. While he was with her, NY was hit with several major snow storms, one on top of the other, dumping over 100" of snow on the area. This kept him away from his house until February 16th. He returned home to a disaster.
Steve came home to discover that the power had gone out, leaving the house without heat. With temps down around zero, the pipes froze and burst, flooding the house and destroying the heating system. For the past two months Steve has been sleeping in his car when at his house, or couch surfing when in NYC. Steve has applied and been denied for small business loans, including COVID relief. Steve has been a wonderful friend to our community, raising funds for those in need, ready to lend a helping hand when he can. Even taking in grumpy farm cats, giving them medical care before himself. This is our opportunity to help our friend, neighbor, and fellow human. Steve is a fiercely independent person, but sometimes life throws us more than we can handle. That's where we come in.
A rough list of what he needs to rebuild his home & business:
Submersible well pump........................$400
35 gallon pressure tank........................$250
Recirculating pumps (3)........................$400
Furnace.......................................................$5,000
Labor............................................................$??????
Interior repairs........................................$??????
Steve is hoping to do some of the labor himself, but will need to hire professionals for a decent amount of the work.
Most of you reading this know how much even the smallest amount helps when you're facing something so scary and overwhelming. I believe in our community and in our power to lift each other up when someone is struggling. By reading this story, sharing, donating, no matter how large or small, you are adding and building the a stronger foundation for someone who needs us, and in turn fortifying our community, making us stronger. Steve is someone who has been there for others. He is someone who deserves a safe, warm, livable home where he can thrive and continue the business he has put his life into.
Please consider donating whatever you can. I believe in our community, let's show Magpie we believe in him.
