My son jasper is a sweet 6-year-old. He was diagnose with thalassemia hemoglobin E beta zero at 4 months old. This is an inherited blood disorder that causes his body to have less hemoglobin than normal. Hemoglobin is necessary to enable red blood cells to carry oxygen. Jasper has been receiving red blood cell transfusions every 3 weeks since 4 months old. To hopefully eliminate the need for life long blood transfusions, Jasper’s doctors would like to perform a bone marrow transplant. However, over time, continued blood transfusions can cause a build up of iron in the blood which prevents a bone marrow transplant. Before Jasper can receive a bone marrow transplant, his iron levels needed to be lowered. To address this new complication, he required chelation therapy which includes taking an oral medication (jadenu) as well as an injection (desferal) daily the last couple of years. Thankfully, his iron level is finally low enough so he can start his chemo and get the bone marrow transplant he has been desperately needing after 6 long years of monthly blood transfusions. I have to quit my job to move to Seattle for 6 months to take care of him while he under goes the bone marrow transplant and recovers at The Fred Hutch Team of Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. I have 3 other kids that I am trying to go back home on the weekend to go see and spend some time with them. This time apart will be hard on our family. I am trying to raise some funds while I am out of a job to help pay for gas, food, and caring for my kids. If you can help with anything I would appreciate it .Thank you for taking the time to read this and keep Jasper Ben in your prayers.
