Support for the Arrington Family

Brittany is an ER nurse at MUSC and has been pregnant with twins. Despite taking extra precautions, she spiked a fever and had body aches on Saturday, August 8th, and was diagnosed with COVID. Sunday, August 9th, she went to the hospital for contractions, thinking that she was dehydrated. One of the twins’ heart rates was fluctuating and the doctors were concerned so they took Brittany in for an emergency c-section to deliver the babies. They were born at 1:20 and 1:22 am on Monday morning. Her husband Colt (a Charleston County Deputy) was allowed to be there for the delivery and was able to briefly see the girls before they were taken to the NICU.

Within an hour of the delivery, Brittany began having complications as she had lost a lot of blood, complicated by her blood not clotting properly. She quickly decompensated and was rushed back into the operating room where they performed another surgery and massive blood transfusions. She is currently in the ICU, with a breathing tube (for comfort and until she is stable), on blood pressure support and has now received nearly 20 units of blood products.

Both babies are doing well in the NICU, but they still have a long road ahead before heading home. They are on a little bit of extra oxygen with CPAP but are feeding and "doing well."

Due to Brittany having COVID, Colt is unable to be by his wife's side, and has yet to hold his babies. They do not know when he will be allowed to visit. For now, their MUSC family is ensuring that he is still nearby.

They have a large village of support between their immediate family, their CCSO and thin blue line family, and their MUSC family. However, no one expected this to happen and they need all the extra support we can give them. Brittany will likely be out longer than she expected and does not have enough sick leave beyond 7 weeks. Colt will likely need extended leave as well to care for his wife, 2 premature beautiful babies, all while maintaining a normal life for their 2 year old daughter at home.

If you are able and willing, please consider donating in order to support this family in their time of need. We thank you in advance.
