A Camden Fringe play set during England's largest witch-hunt and exploring the rise of fanaticism.
Elizabeth Clarke has been scorned and feared by her neighbours ever since her mother was executed as a witch. When unexplainable misfortune strikes Manningtree, Elizabeth is herself accused and arrested for witchcraft. Matthew Hopkins is a young man who has yet to escape the shadow of his deceased minister father. Suspecting Satan may walk the Essex countryside, and seeing this as a chance to prove himself, Hopkins volunteers to interrogate the witch. The events that follow that fateful night would lead to the executions of as many as 100 innocent people.
"Deliver Us From Evil" is written by K.S. Norris and is based on her ongoing PhD research on the East Anglian witch trials at the University of Essex.
"Deliver Us From Evil" will be performing August 4-6 at the Bridewell Theatre in London. Tickets.
Donations will aid us in funding this ambitious and timely project. Funding will allow us to cover creative costs like set-building, costumes, and props, and logistics such as participation fees and promotional materials. We believe that "Deliver Us From Evil" is a particularly relevant piece of theatre in our current times where extremism, paranoia, and otherization is just as prevalent as it was during the era of witch-hunting.
