My mom, Roberta, raised me as a single mother. She sacrificed immensely to ensure I would obtain educational experiences she did not have. As I wrap up my final semester at NYU Law and prepare to take the bar exam this summer, I am reaching out to my community for support in helping me get my mom back on her feet.
In early February 2026, my mom was targeted by scammers who drained her bank account. Despite our prompt reports to federal agencies, local law enforcement, and constant communication with her bank, it has now been over 4 weeks since my mom’s account was drained. While initially claiming the case would be closed within 7-10 business days, her bank has failed to give us any resolution for over a month (although they’ve made clear recovery of her funds is unlikely).
This theft comes at a particularly critical moment as my mom was about to sign a lease for a new apartment. This apartment is an essential opportunity for my mom to regain stability, as she has been without stable housing since she was unlawfully evicted in 2023. In the last three years, she has been caught in a vicious cycle of struggling to find a stable job due to her lack of housing, and struggling to find housing due to her lack of a stable job. During my first year of law school, her housing insecurity led her to live with me for 4 months in my Brooklyn studio apartment. Since then, my mom has continued to pursue every possible lead, ultimately moving to Arizona where she finally has an opportunity to establish her own home for the first time in three years.
Thank you in advance for any contribution you can make to help my mom recover from this theft, and continue to move toward the stability she has been working so hard to achieve.
With gratitude,
Alberta
