The Ngukurr Culture Car initiative

In 2023 I began a campaign, along with Jerry Remkes, Matthew Hoy and a host of supporters to raise money to support the purchase of a Landcruiser to help Wägilak language song keeper, internationally renowned musician, and Elder, Daniel Wilfred, serve his community and keep alive the oldest continuously practised music tradition in the world. I am also a musician and have played music with Daniel for over 12 years, including in the acclaimed groups, Hand to Earth, and the Australian Art Orchestra. The campaign was successful and the car, a Toyota Prado, has been purchased. Ownership was transferred to the Ngukurr Language Centre, an Aboriginal run organisation that will manage the car, which will be leased to Daniel to use to travel far and wide for ceremony and teaching. The Language Centre will manage registration, insurance, and maintenance and we are continuing to fund raise now to support these ongoing expenses.
