Secret Soles

23 years ago, during my 3rd-grade year, I found myself summoned to the principal's office. To my surprise, Principal Ray and Secretary Smith presented me with a box bearing the Nike logo. Inside were a pair of brand new Air Maxes. Their origins were a mystery, as they were delivered anonymously.

Tears welled up in my eyes at this unexpected act of kindness. It was a pivotal moment for me, as I had been struggling to fit in after losing my mother to prison and enduring the trauma of child abuse the year prior. Those shoes became more than footwear—they symbolized acceptance and belonging among my peers.

For years, I pondered the identity of the generous soul behind that gift. After 21 years of not knowing, it was shared to me that my flag football coach and 3rd grade teacher – Josh and Shayla Schilling had been the anonymous benefactors of those Nikes.

In honor of their secret gift, each year I put together this fundraiser to give back. 2022 was the first year I invited friends and family to join me, and you guys did not disappoint. We raised over $1,000 and we donated shoes to over 15 kids in 8 different communities across Iowa! This year, I wish to extend that joy again to you, I am aiming to raise $500.

While the recipients will remain unaware of the donors, I'm eager to share any feedback we receive with those who contribute. If you'd like to hear back, please reach out after donating. We've chosen GoFundMe and Venmo as places to donate.
