For Just One Night

We met "Ellen" over a month ago.  She was living in her van with her two sons.  She had been working and living with a relative.  When the corona virus struck, her employer told her to work from home.  But the relative said that she could not live with them anymore, so working from home was impossible.  A friend loaned them a van...but now she was out of work, and could not get unemployment (because she technically turned down work).  She has been to every agency in Contra Costa County, but none of them are able to help her.  She was turned down for Cash Aid from the county because she has "too much income"--survivors' benefits for her sons under $1000 a month.  Then it turned worse--she had to give the van back.  She and her sons are now on the streets--when it is 100 degrees; when it goes down to 50 degrees at night.  One agency said they would give her 3 nights in a motel, but they wouldn't get back to her for 4 to 7 business days.  When I checked in with her this week because of the hot weather, I found she had to give back the van and her phone would only text, not call.  So, we put her up in a motel (that is another story!) for 3 nights.  They have to leave tomorrow.  We are continuing to work with "Ellen", helping her to navigate to finding her footing, someplace to stay.  Everything is magnified 10 times because of the Shelter in Place.   In the meantime, we are trying to help her stay off the street.  If you can donate anything toward a night's stay in a motel, it would be so appreciated by "Ellen" and her children.
